painting leather Leather prep before acrylic paint application
Herbie posted a topic in How Do I Do That?
I have been you tubing and searching this site for a generally accepted way to prep leather before adding acrylic paint. This is what I have come up with: tooling apply neats foot oil or other treatment if needed deglaze dye and or stain apply acrylic paint I am not sure about doing anything over the paint as I do not want it to be removed by antique or resolene or whatever as I have read can happen. I am unsure of these first steps and unsure of when to apply antique and a sealer. If anyone or several could chime in with all the steps in an acceptable order and any precautions I will be very grateful and appreciative! -
So my question starts here. I am looking to paint, (not dye), some leather projects I am currently working on. From my research one of the best leather paints is Angelus acrylic. While I don't have an issue paying the money and ordering it my problem is this. I live in the midwest. It is currently 26 degrees outside. I do not have a local store that has "acrylic leather paint" I cannot order the Angelus and have it shipped as it will freeze and ruin it. I do have a Hobby Lobby within an hours drive so the question is, can I use Hobby Lobby "Master's Touch Acrylic Paint" on leather and can it then be sealed with something like super sheen? Is there a big difference between "Acrylic Paint" and "Angelus Acrylic Leather Paint" Hope someone out there can help me...

Hey y'all! I am an amateur leatherworker who has made a bit of a name for myself at local craft fairs and markets for vibrantly dyed leather goods (mostly collars, harnesses, and other items that don't need to be extremely flexible). So far I have achieved this using Fiebing's acrylic dye and an airbrush, but I am interested in branching out to use different products with a wider shade range. I am thinking of going with the Angelus acrylic leather paint but I often see the words "paint" and "dye" used interchangeably for acrylic products. Are these terms synonyms or are there substantial differences between a leather dye and a leather paint that I should be conscious of before trying to colour large strips of leather with the paint? Furthermore, is there any difference between an acrylic dye like Fiebings and a fluid acrylic pigment like those sold at craft stores? Thanks a bunch!

I'm making my (very particular) wife a new phone case. She wants it black with her initials stamped in and a flower on it. The flower needs to be in multiple colors. I am planning to use acrylic paint to do the flower. She wants antique on the flower to show the cuts and maybe some antique in the initial stamps to make it show up a bit better. My thought is to carve and paint the flower, stamp the letters, then dye the balance of the case black. I'm unsure about the next steps (tancote, resist, oil, etc).

I am doing a project on veg tan leather with small lettering. I am dying it red and then painting the letters white. I was told you could just dye the whole thing red. Apply a coat of resolene which should seal in the dye and then paint over the red dye. But the red keeps bleeding through the white. Am I not letting the dye dry long enough or maybe not letting the resolene dry long enough. I'm letting the dye dry about 3 hours under a fan. Buffing then applying resolene with cloth letting dry for 2 hours and buffing then applying the paint. Any suggestions?

So I've been making straps with names painted on them in acrylic paint. The straps are 10oz Herman oak leather. I started to use 100% neatfoot on the backside only to soften the leather up after dying about a month ago. Now I'm fining that some of them are having the paint on the frontside falling off. Even after I seal them with multiple acrylic sealers. I also am finding the dye is leeching off too. Any suggestions on what else to use to soften the leather up besides a oil bc I think that is the problem bc I have never had this problem before using the neatsfoot

Hello folks! I've occasionally used acrylic leather paints, usually for small accenting. I would like to do a bit more, however I am concerned that no matter how well it's been applied and sealed that it will not simply last long on an item that will see a lot of wear like belts, wallets and purses. I've seen some mind blowing leather work out there with whole purse flaps hand painted and always wondered how they fare down the road. I would hate spend extra time (that could be used painting dye on by hand) and charge more for a hand painted piece that will start to wear off in a year, and I'm sure a customer would not be happy with a 400 dollar purse flaking within a year. Does anyone out their that professionally specializes in using acrylic leather paints have any advice or links? Thanks for your time! Cheers

Hi there, Trying to figure out what products and in which order to apply them. I am making dog collars. So far this is the process. 1. Tool 2. Paint with Angelus acrylic leather paint. 3. Lightly neatsfoot oil. 4. ***1st question?***.What can I use over the acrylic paint to seal so I can antique? A few people said not to use NeatLac as it will disolve paint!!! 5. Seal with what ever a few people recommend. Fiebings Leather Sheen? 6. Antique with Fiebings antique paste. 7. Seal with 2 light coats of Eco-Flo high gloss sheen to help with waterproofing dog collar. 8. Condition with Aussie Conditioner. Sorry if this has been addressed. Seached forums and went back 6 pages in this forum trying to find answer! Thanks for any help!!

A recent project, the red is acrylic paint thinned with water for a slightly translucent finish. Finished with a mix of Eco Flo Chestnut tan and Fiebings Dark Brown antique. Stitched on my old Singer Patcher.

Here are a few shots of a recently completed guitar strap for a friend of mine. You probably can't guess what band he likes. It's about 4 oz veg tan with a deer lining, and a pick holder on back. I bought the deer hide on sale, and it was just crap when it arrived. The grain side was terribly wrinkly and looked like it had been dragged through a coal mine. I kept it anyway and ended up using the flesh side for this and other projects! Props for the deer idea to Colt Knight. This feels like buttah against skin!

Hey everyone, I've done some searching but come up with mixed results. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions for the best combo for painting and sealing on top of Fiebings Pro Oil Dye? I'm cutting, tooling, punching holes and then dying my pieces black — passing them off to a friend to do some painting on them (using a full range of color), and then she's giving them back so I can seal the paint and stitch them up. I haven't done any painting, acrylic or otherwise, on leather yet so I'm wondering if anyone had and product or combo recommendations given that I'm using the pro oil dye... Thanks in advance!

Hi guys, newbie here! I know there's a few posts about this kind of stuff, but can't seem to find the info I'm looking for specifically,so any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Sooo, here goes..... (1) Is there REALLY any difference between "leather" paints, and acrylics(say,FolkArt)? (2) Can one/does one condition/oil leather anywhere in the process? If so,before or after painting? (3) Is there a REALLY GOOD sealer available? I'd prefer satin finish rather than stark high-gloss,but.... Thanks so much in advance for any help and I would love any other info/knowledge you might have about the whole painting/finishing thing!!!
