I am from overseas and will be in Arizona for the summer and was hoping to stock up on quality tools for leather carving and tooling. I was wondering if anyone could recommend somewhere in Arizona where I might be able to buy tools from someone who is really skilled in tooling. I brought some of my work with me hoping to have a professional see where I can improve and what tools I should buy to help improve my work. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

This is a simple technique I use to trace patterns onto my moistened leather. Instead of tracing the patterns to trace paper 1st why not trace it directly onto the leather from the printed pattern. 1st place a piece of food wrap over the moistened leather to prevent the printout from getting wet. 2nd, tape the printout over the area you want to trace the pattern onto the leather. Watch the tutorial to see how I do this. Works perfectly every time and the trace looks really nice. Let me know if it helps you!

So first of all, I have been wanting to work with leather for a while now, crafting things for myself such as pet collars, guitar straps, etc. Here's the cool part, I get leather scraps from my job! But.. I'm not sure how to work them. They are pre dyed and fire tested for aviation upholstry use - so I'm not sure how to carve into them. It would really be awesome if I could learn how to do so. I have this great Christmas gift idea of making a leather cover for an art sketch book for my boyfriend. Things I need to know: 1. Can I carve into predyedupholstry leather. Thickness is about 1/8". Really quality stufff (I mean this stuff goes into corp jets! ) 2. What would the steps be? (thankful for tips) 3. Would Ihave to redye it to show the design? 4. What's the best type of glue to use of leather to adhere to a book cover? 5. Any tips for pet collars? I plan on doing most of it by hand and getting tools when I can afford it. But def want to work on the book wrap cover asap SORRYfor having so many questions!! I look forward to getting things done and sharing!

Hi! I have a question for you experts: I saw lots of pics on the Internet of tooled leather pieces that became a little darker where tooled. I'll post an example: http://www.leathercraftstudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/2nd-comparison.jpeg on the lower picture you'll see what I mean...the carved leather being darker than its natural color. Does it depend on the quality/kind of leather, on casing it or what?? I think that's the way to acheve effects like the one on the first picture with finishers...isn't it? Thanks a lot!

Hey everyone!! My name is Casey, and am a new registrant to this site. This is certainly not my first visit to the site, I have been perusing all of your fine work for quite some time now.... just got the oomph to register and start participating/trading ideas from people all around the world!! A little background on my horse/leather history... I apprenticed under a saddle maker, who was from a time when horses were for function, not for fun. I learned all of the basics of structure, strength, ingenuity, and got a daily dose of horse history just about everyday. My teacher is a wonderful man...but he was certainly not about all the "fru-fru"...carving, stamping, etc... So, after I apprenticed with him, and learned all I thought he had to teach me, I started doing a carving seminar here and there, and decided that most of it was pretty basic. After I learned the basic tools for carving, and painting, dying, and stamping; I set out on my own. Headstrong girl, working in an industry that had been male dominant for centuries. It has been trying at times... I have definitely had as many good days as bad, and as many mistakes as successes; and has overall been a very rewarding career thus far. I own 9 horses, 2 ponies, and my resident mule (Bartholomule haha). Most of them are saddle horses, meant for ranching/cutting/riding pens, and even the occasional lazy day when we just go out for a trail ride. I own a halfling and a draft horse (a 2 year old Pertrand filly) that has been stealing my heart the last couple of months. I do own a few carts, and a wagon, and have broke 3 of my horses to pull, and both my ponies as well. We participate in the city parade every year, and boy do we get dolled up to go!! My horses are my life, any time not spent working on my leather i spent learning new things with my horses. They are all such adorable characters, and they never cease to surprise me with the willingness they have to put up with my (sometimes annoying) persistence. My life wouldnt be the same without them, and I like to think that they like me as well ) It is nice to meet you all, and look forward to learning along with you!
