So, being a chubby guy, with a bad case of the middle aged gone-ass, I depend on suspenders to keep my pants up with all the heavy tools I carry in my pockets. So, leather suspenders. Then I came up with the idea of adding a four inch wide "chest panel" with wet molded holsters for the 4 tools i use most on the job. It would be very handy.. That horizontal panel would also keep the suspenders from slipping off my shoulders too. I came up with the idea of using loxx fasteners to make that panel removable. So, while I'm confident that I can make this, friends of mine have questioned whether such a thing should ever be made. One guy suggested that rather than the civilian version of a military LBE i was envisioning, I'd just look like a giant nerd instead. I reminded him that I'm also the dungeon master of a local gaming group, so this isn't necessarily a problem. X-D So, what do you think? Should this idea ever be made?

I had a customer ask for a custom set of suspenders. And he want it to have a holster under one arm and 2 spare mags on the other. He does not want a chest strap and wants to have the holster an mags detachable so he can have just to suspenders. I have tried to make patterns and I basically am lost. Any and all help will be deeply appreciated.

My first attempt at making a pair of suspenders. First 2 pics are of my creation. The 3rd pic is what I was going by as reference. I think the buckle level is correct but I'm not standing up straight (sorry Mom) Comments and suggestions are most welcome as I'm just starting out.

Hey all, I know there are a ton of threads on sewing leather, and I am not a new guy when it comes to searching and posting new topics, but I'm looking for specifically firefighters, saddle makers, or anyone that works with thicker leather (8-13oz). Currently I hand sew just about anything, and it looks great, love doing it but, but a machine would be more efficient. What is good starter machine that would work well with thicker leathers, as well as thinner leathers, and something I could find used or on the almighty craigslist? I would like American made (the oversees stuff may work, I just don't know that much about them). I know a couple guys in the industry who use Cobra Class 4 machines, but that is out of my current price range. Plus, I'd like something used for a first sewing machine. Any info, direction or tips of the trade are welcome, and happy tooling! Ryan

I am looking for one who has worn, or made Bruce Grants "Quick-Draw" Galluses (page 484 Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding). Are they comfortable? Are they as easy to make as they look? I am thinking about making a pair as my first from "scratch" leather project so any advice or insight will be greatly appreciated.

I recently fell into the leather crafting world by telling myself it would be easier to just make the item than purchase one. $300 + dollars later in tools and supplies I engaged in making a custom pair of suspenders for my job ( Fire Dept.) I finished my first pair last night but I have doubts about the type of dye I used. Here are a few questions I have.. I originally bought the Eco-flo Pro water stain with an eco flo gloss finish... I ended up finding a deal on the Eco-Flo all in one prairie tan quart ($14 quart) and decided to use the tan with a black letter inlay. I used the water stain black to dye the letters, and used the all in one prairie tan to cover the suspenders. I had issues getting a nice even coat, they came out a bit streaky, and had some dark sports on them ( i figure out it was from letting the dye sit to long before wiping it off) My main worry is the dye bleeding for rubbing off while im using them.. its obvious that firefighter suspenders will come in contact with a lot of sweat and moisture. 1. How do you think the "all in one" will hold up over time? 2. Is there something else I can apply over it ( another gloss coat) or something to keep it from bleeding or rubbing off. ( i did dye both sides) 1st attempt was kind of messy and I didnt cover the back side before applying the dye and I decided to jsut go ahead and finish the under ( rookie mistake )I was originally jsut gonna do the sides and top . 3. Is there a way to condition the leather prior to stamping and dyeing to make the leather not as stiff? Or is there a way to condition it after, once the dye gloss has been added? I know they will break in eventually, but I wasn't sure if there was a way to make them more comfortable first time around
