Hello! So i am a fashion student from portugal and the leatherwork always amazed me, so i am using this new project at college to do some experiences with veg tanned leather. And, of course, as a newbie i have encounter some problems with the art... would really appreaciate if i could get some insigh, helps and tips from the pros! Help please? So on the 1st two pictures i wet molded veg tanned leather and then tried to dye it with the fiebing's pro dye (used the deglazer first), burnished the edges with tokonole and as i really want a really high gloss finish i tried to aply the fiebings Saddle-lac spray and as you can see it is really baaaaddd! all uneven, full of little spots of dirt, just bad. And on the last three pictures, i have cut some straps of veg tanned leather and again, deglazer, dyed with the black pro-dye, burnished edges and this tip i tried to apply the Eco-flo top finish gloss diluted on 50% of water, and again, all uneven, some parts glossy and other not, and as i want this strap to go over a D-ring, as i tried to bend it got those tiny ugly bumps/wrinkles. HELLLLLLLP????? For how long should i wait between applying each product? (i think i did it quite fast, tbh like in 10 minutes gaps) With what should i apply the different products? And i kind don't like using the tokonole to burnish the edges as i get on both sides of the leather these sticky imprints that you can notice in the end and it is really ugly. Is the leather i got just bad quality? Thanks! I would loooove to get some tips, help and insights from the pros!! Please, thank you and much love from portugal!! -
Vegetable tanned leather which is labeled a double shoulder for sale. Labeled 8-9 oz (3.1-3.5mm) leather thickness, backside is marked 12.5 square feet. I think it is probably correct. This double shoulder is fairly clean as can be seen in the photos. The backside is fairly smooth. It does show fat wrinkles and other characteristics. I have more leather than I can use right now, so I'm selling off some pieces such as this when I have the time. Labeled asTandy item #9052-02, their price $90-$99 plus tax on the label, currently $112 - $140. I'm no expert, but I don't see the filling that is used in some of the newer Tandy leathers to cover up scars and such, so this *may* be some of the older nicer leather. My price: $55 plus shipping. I am also selling another side, which is an Oak Leaf Light Skirting 10-12 oz, photos in another listing, for $115 plus shipping. Combine these two pieces of leather to save on shipping and save on leather: $160 plus shipping or best offer. YinTx I just noticed the shadow lines in the photo: it is light shining through the slats in the back of a chair, no diagonal shadow marks on the leather.

Good Evening all, I am completely new to leather and have just been buying whole and part hides off eBay in order to get to know leather and practice working with it. I've been paying about £80 per hide, chrome tanned. I now know what I want (I think) but I don't really know where to buy. I ideally want a supplier in Spain as that is where I will need it shipped. I'm looking for full grain veg tan around 2mm thick. I have been in touch with Tandy which are based in Spain for their Europe outfit so that's perfect for shipping costs, however, their range seems limited and for the money they are asking, I don't want to part cash if there is a greater option out there which I'm sure there is and hoping one of you can help. Your help is greatly appreciated. In case someone has some advice, the leather is for tote style bags and similar. The handles are to be made from 2.8-3.2mm veg tanned Spanish shoulder single thickness. So if anyone has any other suggestions for types of leather for the bags, I would love to hear them. 9/10 oz. heavy weight, superior quality, premium American hides veg tanned by Herman Oak. Yeah, this is really good expensive stuff. Located in Aurora, CO Asking $20 each piece of belly remnant, or 6 for $100. Also have really nice trimmings, good sized pieces cut from spine and shoulders (before strap cutting). Nothing wrong with it! I just have too darn much. Wholesale cost paid for this stuff is over $9/square foot. So I've been trying to find sources for colourful veg tanned leather... So far I have found buttero leather which i think is entirely veg tanned and Pergamena in New York has nice colours too but their leather is made for bookbinding and is not stiff enough for what i want to make. Does anyone have any other sources?

Hi all you lovely informed leather workers! I am new to leather crafting, and have been getting really into carving and tooling. I really like the suppleness of milled leather for the kinds of bags I am using, and just wondering if anyone has a source for this kind of leather outside of Tandy. The leather I've gotten from Tandy has been nice, but I would love to find a more affordable/wholesale place to purchase, or just any alternative. Any leads or information would be wonderful! Thanks! Hi Everyone, I have been slowly working my way into a better quality of tooling leather, unfortunately the price increases as well. I have been pretty partial to the European Bends from tandy. The quality of leather is very good with little to no flaws in the leather. My question is, i am looking for a comparable quality of tooling leather for a lower cost. I have been collecting watches for some time now. From collecting watches came collecting watch straps. I realized how easy it was to construct a NATO or a Zulu type watch strap and then I decided to try it on my own. After a few attempts of these easier types of straps I decided to kick it up a notch and try some stitching. I really enjoy the results and people on Instagram seem to be enjoying it as well. I plan on opening and Etsy store soon and selling my new found hobby. Let me know what you guys think. I've only been leatherworking for about two months now, but it has taken me over! Thanks!!! -
When trying to find buffalo or bison leather i can only find 30% veg tanned or 30% reveg leather. My question is can u wet mold 30% veg tanned or re veg leather and will it make items rust assuming it has some chrome tanning done to it? Thank you for your time and posts -
Hello, I'm fairly new to leather working but have sewn all my life. I am doing OK but I still have a lot to learn. I have question about wet forming with veg tanned leather. I am making some wood chisel tip covers for a client, and was telling her how I make them. She is concerned that it doesn't get dry enough and her chisels will suffer for it. I thought they were very dry but her concerns are very valid, she spent a lot of money on her chisels. How do I know for certain they are dry and have no moisture left? Does the leather hold a lot of moisture? What is your experience with knife sheaths? What is the best procedure for drying? I was just leaving them sit on a shelf for a few days.
