Velcro vs snaps?

Recommended Posts

Considering making some of my own cuff bracelets (standard 1" bridal leather).  Typically buy them but I am very hard on them and they get pretty beat - or I loose them, look down and its gone.  I have a couple out there in the Sierra Mtns I lost backpacking   :rolleyes2:  Also, I find the basic snaps uncomfortable sometimes, esp when typing.  Wondering it there is a way to reduce the thickness of the fastening, not such a thick profile.  Then I wondered if there was a a way to glue vecro to where the snaps usually go.  Stitch probably better, but dont have the ability (yet).  Just thinking out loud

Yes, you can buy velcro with self-adhesive backs, but I don't trust that and I glue it on

If you buy the self adhesive 1 inch squares . . . you can put a small rivet in the middle of both pieces . . . should be plenty of enough velcro to hold them together . . . and the snaps will keep the velcro from pulling away from the leather.

The only thing about velcro . . . I've had it get clogged with dust, lint, dirt, and stuff . . . so it doesn't hold as well . . . needs to be cleaned every now and then.

May God bless,

Dwight

I've used sewn on velcro on similar straps.  Glue alone would probably be fine, but I prefer to sew as well.

I like the rivet idea, I don't think glue alone will hold up. Sewing is good too.

I don't like Velcro as only fastener because I find it separates too easily. That said, my cheap snaps from Aliexpress aren't secure either. Would buckles be an option?

Welcome

the velcro with glue sucks.  heat, sweat, chemicals...ect will probably dissolve/weaken the glue.

stitching will be somewhat better.

just an fyi, if you decide to use velcro...either with glue or stitch, do your due diligence.  From my understanding and buying alot of the stuff is that there are different grades? where they will last x many cycles of use.  Usually the loop will give out and you have a fuzzball.  If you have any shoes with the stuff, look at them and or anything else that may use the velcro.

I would look at some method the use some leather thong/lace and maybe use that to fasten the ends.

You could try lining the cuff to hide the back of the snap to relive the discomfort.
