Maths and cases (question)

Recommended Posts

Greetings all,

seems to the wet noodle between me ears, there must an answer to this involving maths.

Someone wants a case for a mobile, but obviously cannot leave the mobile whilst being made.  Also, does not want a wet molded case, merely a slip case.  Should be fitted, but not too tight.  Having an equation would resolve it and ensure the mobile fits properly into the case.

Hypothetical:  The mobile is 50mm wide, 100mm long, and 15mm thick.  The leather used is 1,5mm and a stitch line 4mm in from the edge.

Perhaps age, but I cannot seem to come up with a solution that could suffice this.  Anyone have a thought or idea?

Cheers!

You can do it with maths...or ..you can make plywood rectangle to the phone dimensions ( plywood exists in multiple thicknesses , one of which is 15mm ) and use that to substitute for the phone(s)..Some ( looking in an antipodean direction here ) would maybe even use a 3d printer to make a "mock up" phone..Phone shops have plastic mock ups on display, so as to stop customers stealing the real "shiny" :)

At 15mm..we know it isn't an iphone ..waaaay too thick.

This is how I do them, . . . this one holds a Samsung Note 8, . . . but I've made several others of varying dimensions, . . . usually I make a plywood or pine wood model, . . .  gives me a little something to shape it around.

May God bless,

Dwight

When a customer asks me to make a phone case,( or knife case etc.)  I draw the outline of the phones dimensions in my order book.  9 times out of 10 I have already made a wood template . If not, I'll make a new one using MDF . Easy to cut shape etc.   I make any minor adjustments with pieces of leather . I can use them for wet molding or soft leathers .

The pic is just a small sample of the templates  I have.  Phone sizes have changed a lot over the years.Have a look at the two bottom left corner, and then look at the ones in the top right corner. I do have bigger ones ...yikes !

Hope this helps....a bit :)

Well if it were me and I had to rely on math, I would do this for a starting place:

Leather dimension = phone dimension + phone thickness+ 2x leather thickness + 2x stitch allowance + extra If needed.

I would make the width of your case 76mm + extra (maybe 8 mm?) Total 86mm.

Obviously this isnt exact and may vary a bit. But should get you close. The extra to add will depend on how loose the phone needs to be.

Then do the same for the height.

That being said, I would recommend making a blank. You can make one out of leather scrap too if you need too. And cardboard works well also for basic shapes like most phones.

In a pinch you could also bunch enough credit-card-sized plastic cards together that give you the thickness of the item.

Sometimes I 3D print it sometimes I cut it out in ply or craftwood  and sometimes I just cut it out in thick veg and keep adding layers and trimming until I get what I want. Give the leather a wax polish and she's good to go. For measurements from that cut some strips at the same thickness you intend to make it from about 20mm(3/4") wide and use that as a ruler to get your lengths laid over your mould piece.

Thank you!  That was what I was after.....  Cheers!
