  2. Where are you located in Tennessee? I live in Molino, not Molina.
  3. Certain leather work or crafting has titles; ie cobbler = repairing footwear, cordwainer = making footwear, saddler, and others. But what about bag-makers, leather armourers, board-game makers, and such. We need to make up names to cover those crafts
  4. How much would a basic laser engraver cost? Just one to burn simple things into the leather. Not too deep or anything
  5. Checked tonight for a second spot to attach the return spring. I don't see one. I did try turning the attachment point around, which almost works but then one of the levers bumps into it when you select long reverse stitches. I'd like to replace the factory spring with one that has less stiffness, but I haven't been to a hardware store in a while. Maybe it's time to start forming my own springs.. It only engageswhen I want to wind a bobbin. I wrote that part a couple months ago, and it actually hasn't bothered me since 😀 And I actually use the winder more than I used to. That is, when I think of it and when I think I might be using the same color bobbin thread for a while. I switch colors a lot.. I looked at this tonight. I don't see a good option outside of making my own label for the knob. Or drilling a new hold for the pin that acts as the final stop for the knob. I'm setting it so that the stitch length goes to zero as the pin runs into the final stop. I suppose instead I could figure out where a 4mm stitch is and line the knob up at the 4. 🤔 Ok. Seems reliable with a round eyelet. I can see benefits both ways. Here is the hook assembly. I assume this is NOT the singer 111 style. I wonder if the singer style has a larger outer hook diameter..

  8. Was planning to keep it intact, and just tape the thread to the top plate for measurement. But when I took it apart to disable the Mode button (so it will always stay set to grams), it looked so easy to repurpose... kitchen-scale.mp4 Here's a link to the original 500g kitchen scale I bought. And a screenshot: Drilled two holes in the upper right and reused the original screws to mount the load cell there. Added hot glue to keep the wires from being damaged from being tossed around Taped over the digits to the right of the decimal place so they don't distract. Some other posts regarding measuring bobbin tension: gymnast uses a dynamometer RockyAussie measures with hammers Why measure? Because we like numbers 😃 gymnast: how much bobbin tension?
  9. Sorry, I do not agree with your assessment. 🤪
  10. I just say I used to build plastic model kits, most seem to understand that.
  11. 10 Hail Mary's should suffice.
  12. Well thats better than the funny looks I get when I say 'I model', or 'make models'. Now reduced to 'I build Airfix model aeroplanes, I've never growed up'
  13. Yep, that had already occurred to me, my intention is to make up tooling so I can use it both ways. That should hopefully cover most contingencies.
  14. sorry, sorry, sorry, I called the tang the scales I'm sorry did I mention that I apologise and I'm sorry
  15. When I'm asked what hobbies I have I just say I dabble in leatherwork. People can make of that what they will.
  16. Paracord is normally wrapped straight onto the tang, I guess it's simple and possibly looks "tacticool". If you glue leather onto the tang first it will bulk it up and make it more comfortable to hold.
  17. Thank you Fred and Chuck for the replies. I’ll give it a try.
  18. I like that one. kgg
  19. Most machines have two spots to hook the return spring into. You should check to see if yours has a second location to give a softer return. Possible solutions: a. The internal rubber wheel that drives the winder needs to be adjusted so it only engages when you want to wind a bobbin. However if you wind a bobbin while sewing it can create a problem of unwinding the thread from the bobbin. There seems to be a couple of versions of this model some with the bobbin winder on the top of the machine and others driven with the main belt. I would just cut to the chase and buy a winder that runs of the main belt which probably would cost about $16 USD off Amazon. The dial should have a set set so you could move the dial to the correct position. Most machines are that way. I know some of those machines came with a smaller top thread pin with only two holes. As a note the hook assembly in the Jianglong 341 seems to come in couple of favours one that looks like the old old Nakajima 341L which was similar to the Singer 111 and another that is like the Juki LS-341. Which one do you have??? Just my thoughts. kgg Juki bought Nakajima and renamed it the Juki LS-341.
  20. This is kind of like the debate in the shooting world, "are you a reloader or a hand loader?". I tend to think of Leather Crafter as a hobbyist or journeyman sort of level. Probably because lower grade leather and hides are often sold as "craft grade". Or in many things, Handcrafted or Homemade? I think "homemade" carries the connotation that it's not really professional grade. "Hey, it's pretty good for homemade". Bite me ... 😬
  21. I had a customer come in wanting a holster for Heritage Rough Rider .22. The pistol has a beautiful set of wooden red grips. He wanted a cross draw holster so he could carry it around as a mouse gun while he's working on his property. I used 10oz vegtan. The dye is Fiebing's Pro yellow with just a little brown to give it a deeper golden color. Finished with Resolene 50/50
  22. For me, it's "leather work" at the same time. I would not call a professional saddle maker a leather worker or a leather craftsman; I would think of them as a saddle maker.
  23. Nope, it's the Cobra holster plate without the feed dog. The presser foot set is from Hennigan though. I primarily use a #23 needle and the narrow presser foot has just enough room so I don't use the Cobra presser foot unless I go to a larger needle.
  24. Hello everyone, I am cleaning an Adler 5-27 and I was wondering if it is possible to remove the jump foot? I have removed all the screws, but I can't get it to move a mm. 😅 My guess is that the pin that is visible in the second picture is stuck through the rod. As I don't own the manual I was hoping somebody here is able to help me! Kind regards, IMK
  25. A friend of mine had an old saddle and halter/bridle she wanted cleaned. The saddle hadn't been cleaned and had quite a bit of mud, grime, and dust. I cleaned it up and replaced a couple pieces. The halter/bridle didn't have mud on it but it was grimy, swollen, and is starting to disintegrate. It felt like it had been drowned in wax and weighs a lot. I has a curb chain but it had a rusty quick link holding it on. She wanted it cleaned but I advised her that it was on it's way out and it should be completely replaced. The new halter/bridle is made with 10oz vegtan. The crown, brow band, nose band, and cheek pieces are double layered.
