  1. Hi eric Welcome to the LW site. you will love it here. any question you want answered we can answer it here between the 8200 leatherworkers you have several thousand years of experiance to pull from. welcome again.

  2. as JS stated i would use the 3/32" lace. I would use kangaroo for its durabilty and for its stregnth. You can get it from kevin at Springfield leather. He sells it in different colors ,size, and finishes
  3. I would not tool them. i would use an air brush to put them in.on a few of the stars that you want to be stick out I would use the back of a paint brush and dip it in the paint and put on the leather and then airbrush over it. after see thousands of stars in my 8" telescope they do not shine as a point of ligth but as a point of light with a haze around it and sometime because of the dust in the air you will see rays comning off of it. best thing to do it go see some of the hubble space telescope pictures and go from there or go to google earth and see the stars from the google site. might even want to make you put a galaxy in the picture lol

  9. Shalbaal has #3 and #5 pending ,sorry folks
  10. Tandy no longer makes a hair blade for the swivel knife,. they have a hair blade tool. it is course on one end and fine lined on the other. You can look on ebay or call kevin at springfield leather. or if you are like me and are resourseful just make one out of tool steel or an extra swivel blade and a checkering file. put the swivel blade in a vice and file off the blade till it is flat.or angled whatever is easier for you to use.use the checkering file to make your groves in the swivel blade.you do not want the grooves to be to deep. I have made several using this method. I have blades for making the right side and and one for the left side of feathers and leaves. I have used extra swivel blades and rat tail files and have made beader blades with them and have made creaser blades as well.

  13. I use the 12" X 12" black poundo board, rubber cemented to a12" X 12" butcher block end grain board 4" thick, set on my small slip proof rubber mat on my 24" X 24" X 1 1/2" piece of marble. that is a solid way to punch leather. I have punched out several thousand feet of strap gymp with my punchs on a set up as I described.
  14. Chris. for burnishing I like to use a wood one better than metal. use cocobolo or ligtim vital(I am not sure of the spelling also called iron wood) because of the natural oils in the wood help to burnish the edge. I use a cocobolo wheel that has a groove on the side and have it where I can mount it on my buffer and that burnishes my project perfect, If I have a project that I can not use the buffer, I have several sticks that I have made just for that purpose. Another thing that helps, is to use gum tragacanth to help the smoothing process. can be found in most hobby stores. The wood creasers that I use and make have a more concave end so that it smooths the leather and does not leave a crease in the leather, The doubles sided metal is used to create lines on the side of the leather for either to compress the edge of the leather or for the line effect it creates. it is not for burnishing purpose.the wood one is used in the saddle and shoe industry to leave a crease in the leather and is also not used for burnishing. for burnishing you need a wood or bone burnisher that has a wide smooth valley in the end of it.Gary
  15. Nice work on the straps and even nicer for you to donate them . hope you keep up the nice work and the work for the community as well .
  16. Very nice work. simple and pretty. keep up the nice work and post more of your work when it is done. Gary
  17. rickey ,don't know if you have alrady done it. what I would do is to strip it with acetone or the deglazer and then place it in a large zip lock and put the black dye in that and let is set overnight to make sure it hase covered the whole piece. I move it around a little in the bag and turn it several times to insure a even coating. It has worked for me on several projects. hope it helped . Gary
  18. Welcome to the site.. Those are some fine looking boots you make there . wish I had a pair. I could use a new pair. Again welcome to LW.Please feel free to anytime and post as many pics as you want . we love to see leather work any and all
  19. I have a set of the decortive cut z series tools. the numbers are Z-999L, Z-999R, Z-998. It does the right cut ,left cut and straight cut. All are in great shape and are ready to go. This set has been discontinued for awhile. so get them while you can because they are getting rarer to find. I am asking $45.00 for the set.and that includes shipping. .the crowner is not for sale,it is spoken for and the 450 is for sale. It has no serrations in it and looks like a v shaped crowner. I am asking 15.00 for it and that includes shipping also.. I do take paypal. Gary
  20. This is a set of discontined tool that I am selling. It is a set of turnback tools. The numbers are T-942, T-943, T-947 .This set of tools are rare and are getting harder to find. I am asking 45.00 for the set and that will include shipping. The tools are in good shape .there is a little flaking of chrome on one of the tools but it does not hurt the tools use. Pm me and let me know if you wish to buy them or make me a trade I can not refuse. Gary
  21. Very nice work you have done there. I love the monograms and the color that you used,Keep up the great work.
  22. Ed ,very nice work you did there.I love your work. just don't wait 25 years to do the next project. lol, Gary
  23. Biker ,deglazer that tandy sells in nothing more than acetone. same thing as fingernail polish remover. I go to the hardware store and buy a quart can for less then what tandy sells a 4 oz bottle for. another thing you can use is saddle soap to clean leather or lexol leather cleaner or condtioner. They make a pro carve that is good for the leather, it cases it nice . I use to keep scraps of leather in a bucket with water in it and it would be nice to case the leather with it.sice I carve very little now i do not do it.
  24. Kim Nice job, was the faries painted on? Real nice job. Bet they really like them. Gary
  25. yo biker. I know since you only have a tandy store you don't have a good selection of good leather and supplies. go to springfield leather and get some supplies from there. And if you need advice just ask. everyone here is more than willing to give and to take advice. between all of us here you have a couple thousand years of knowledge to pull from. that is an awesome thought in itself. glad to have you aboard and hope to keep seeing you on this site. Gary
