I'd run a core for a few inches or so. This will give the braid some static to hold the dropped strings in place.

I agree with Sovarn on the account of, it's easier to drop strands than to add.

Let me see if I'm getting this picture right. You need a flat braid 4 inches long by a 1/2 inch wide? Correct? Then you need to go back to a 4 strand round braid? Correct? How's this all going to come together at the point of the round braiding? Is this one of those leads you put through a loop, like a cinch type lead, or something else you have in mind? Quill braiding(a lot like embroidery) is another option I would consider. Might take a bit longer to do that type of job. But it will garantee that the leather will sit down and behave itself like it should. Brian...
