  1. as you can see i have the wooden and nylon disk burnishers from tandy but as stated before they only are one size, i also have home made ones made from oak dowels (in the drill chuck) and oak spindal from an ornate tabel leg just cut off and modified to do the job I also have for geting in hard places hand burnishers the plastick one from tandy and again hand made turned out in a lathe and a tabel leg spindel, the home made ones work better for me than the shop bought ones as you have more variation, Don
  2. A friend made it for me, he works at some metall company all they did was put the desighn in the computer and laser cut it out, Don
  3. Here is mine, it is based on the old style makers mark to suit the old west gunleather i produce
  4. WoW i just love that fish it realy looks as if its poping out of the water and so alive, i remember a wile back a topic about two bucks stomping in the water and how hard it was to get the water affect but you got that down to a tee with the fish great job, Ive never tried this pictorial carving but seeing the great stuff that is produced on this site im going to have to give it a go my fingers are itching ... great bilfold you managed to do a good job with the colours in the first so go for it although some times naturall does look just as good with a bit of oil, Don
  5. nice seat it looks hot

  8. welcome scott to the leatherworkers.net
  9. welcome Annied to the leatherworker.net very interesting stuff on your web site, Don
  10. im sure if you let the markers realy dry out and then treated (cealed) the leather it would hold up a lot better... the markers are german bought but i know they are the same as the ones that are in the uk so i would think that there is no difference as to the ones in the US, i can only sugest try a brand on some scrap and see what happens, i hope i was abel to help out with your enquiries, let me know how things turned out cheers Don
  11. Here is a pic of the markers and a sample piece that i put in the rain all day the leather was untreated after drying out there is a little run on the red but the rest of the colours are ok
  12. i dont know if it would stand up to weathering, i could do an experiment for a couple of days and let you know, i do know that it doesnt smudg once it has dried
  13. nice work Steve as all have said before me any chance of seeing the bilfold on the inside cheers Don
  14. normaly you dont need to tigh a knot if you back stitch 3-4 holes and just trim of the thread it should hold, what are you using 1 thread and two needles hand stitch if so it should be fine
  15. yes i would off like to spend some time on the 101 ranch, that was a fantastique wild west show with great history, you dont live in the area do you?
  16. do you mean the embossing wheel on the inside? if so it is an old and popular patern used way back in the old west by saddlers up until a few years back McMillan used to make them i belive thats how the name is spelt not sure though, i have heard that they are no longer in buisness as friends off mine have tried to order tools from them and couldent get through, they made them in different sizes i have the larger one so if anny one knows where i could get the small embossing wheel please let me know as over here you dont find them, Don
  17. the leather is 1.5mm thick
  18. it is machine stitched i have a machine that will handel up to about 3-4 mm thickness but very really use it as it will only work well with polly thread and the most prodjects i do i use hanf thread and it breaks to easy in the machine.... the markers are a good idea as they do cover without strokes or lines and it doesnt rub off once its dry hence permanent markers
  19. belive it or not there is no dyes at all, i dont dye a lot of colourefull leatherwork so instead of buying all the colours just for one item i used permanent markers it doesnt wear off and is easier to use and cheaper ... i did a trial piece on a piece of scrap and oiled and rubed and it stood up to the test
  20. Well after a few years of hard wear the old wallet gave up and fell apart so i decided to desighn and make a new one
  21. i have never made a saddle, i really want to but iam unsure how to do it and where to start and i dont really know where to find the right tree for my needs, i have a saddle that is around 110 or maybe a bit more years old that i have to restore so it will be a good bit of experience for me to get the feel of things. Don
