How To Get Rid Of The Fuzzys No Back Of A Hide
electrathon replied to walletman's topic in How Do I Do That?
That is them. The Portland store is a lot bigger. It looks like the site was built by someone at the Eugene store. Once you add shipping I am not sure how they compare to Springfield, I like the fact that I can walk in and buy it. -

Funny, I didn't know they had a website. -
Chuck them in the drill press, spin them and carefully file the edge with a very fine file. If they were better quality you would use a stone and not a file.

How To Get Rid Of The Fuzzys No Back Of A Hide

The last TR side I bought at Oregon leather was $120 if I remember correctly, pretty large side too. It was better quality than the premium top end sides at Tandy. Way less money than Tandy and way better quality. If you have a money shortage, it helps. If you want better quality it helps. There are times when Tandy is cheaper, tooling leather is not one of them, usually. -

The better the leather quality the better the back is, usually. It is amazing how good the back of quality leather looks. At a glance it looks like the front side. I can buy Herman Oak leather in TR grade from Oregon Leather for less money than Tandy sells their hides for. TR (low quality) Herman Oak is superior in quality to Tandy premium. If you want to spend more they have even better quality. The time you waste trying to fix the quality control issues is hard to justify when you can buy better quality for less money. -

It looks very good! -
I have bought a number of tools from them. Every word I have to say about them is good. All of the tools I have bought far excede Tandy quality.

I want to learn shoemaking.

Wow, am I ever late to the party. I made a few playing areound a few years ago. Old handsaw blades are a pretty good economy choice, a fair amount of carbon, easily available and about the proper thickness without having to thin them down. Attached is a pic of the one I liked the most. Circular blades are pretty low carbon. Not sure if the 1080 mentioned is correct, but if it is it is definatly a bad choice. That would make a very easy to sharpen knife that would hold an edge for about half of a cut. High carbon is harder to sharpen and holds an edge acordingly.

You can see his awl on the bench at about the 1:10 mark on the video. This video is majorly abridged, but the work he is doing look amazing.

Splicing- A Lot Of Leather Straps
electrathon replied to benology's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
My idea would be to get a tapered jig made. Put your strap in a channel, there are tapered guides on the sides. Push a skiving knife, round knife or razer blade down the guides and you have a perfectly tapered skive. Should take about 3 seconds each. -
Trying Something New

There are phalic images on the top. I am guessing it is not by design, but could be. -
The metal punch will not work properly on leather. If you bent the compound leverage punch you were squeezing too hard. Aaron

You have a pm, and a bump.

Fine tipped ball point pen, will not poke through the paper because of the roller point.

I have had good luck with a wet coat of contact on one side, clamp it togeather and it will hold once it is dry. Super 99 is WAY better than 77, but I still would not trust it for this. Aaron

Pete, I want to start by saying that you have my support and this is an awsome thing. Total frustration with a Tandy kit is an understatement. Please take what I am about to say as constructive criticism. I like the idea/concept. I do not see on either one where you would put a dollar bill. In general wallets are shaped to hold cards and paper money. If I am seeing this wrong possibly posting a pic showing money in the wallet for a visual referance. Paypal: I don't care how much you hate it, It is the way people pay for things if you don't take credit cards. I would estimate that you loose almost all potential sales over this one issue. Checks are a thing of the past for the most part, electronic payment is how people now pay. I would likely have bought one of these the other day when you first posted, then I saw no paypal. The brakes were on. I can't remember the last time I wrote a check or sent something in the mail. Only do it a couple times a year. Aaron

Bill, That is my favorite background. But, you have to hit it a lot softer. If you do it more gently the background does not look so busy. The attached sheath is backgrounded with the same tool. I noticed the sewing too, good job.

General Rule For Lace Piece Length Lacing Item's Edges?
electrathon replied to Suicide's topic in Braiding
I spread both arms and cut the lace, about 5' or so. If you have high quality lace you can get away with longer, crappy lace and you need to go shorter. Pulling it through the holes will wear it out.
