Embossed Card Wallets
rosiart replied to rosiart's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks , Wild Bill. The embossing folders are double sided plastic templates that are normally used in a die cut machine to emboss a particular design on cardstock. You put the paper inside and the folder has both a positive and negative side so it gives a deep embossing when run through the die cut machine which applies pressure. I found out it works just as well with light weight veg tan leather that has been cased. Hopefully this explanation helps rather than confuses. -

Embossed Card Wallets
rosiart replied to rosiart's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks guys. The blue and purple are ecoflow hi-lite color stains. I'm not sure if Tandy still sells them. I think they only carry the traditional leather colours now, like browns and tan. -
Crossbody Purse For Daughter
rosiart replied to rosiart's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks, Charlie and Rohn. She tells me she loves it which is what I was hoping for. Also, some of her friends asked if I was selling them, so I think they liked it too. :-)- 8 replies

I was really interested in joesnuffle's posts on using an embossing folder to make the leather for his card wallets. Since I have all that stuff from my previous life as a rubber stamper, I decided to give it a go. I used one of the cuttlebug folders and one of the Tim Holtz ones in my original Spellbinders Wizard die cut machine and used veggie tan leather. I am really impressed with the depth I got on these. Thanks for the inspiration, Joe.

My daughter had requested a new purse as hers had gotten rather disreputable. She requested it as a crossbody bag. I used some designer lambskin I got a while back at Tandy, but used a dyed veggie tan for the strap. It is lined but the pic I got of the inside before I gave it to her is too dark to show much detail. Does anyone know what the longevity of these specialty leathers with the smooth finish is likely to be?

Substitute For Swivel Tool ? Need Help In Finding Another Way
rosiart replied to louismoran's topic in How Do I Do That?
http://www.tanglefoottraders.com/#!__tangleboss_swivelknife I don't know if this would help but I find it easier to use than a regular knife. It seem to take less pressure when cutting. -
Marius, it is a special paint that is smoothed using a heat tool. The closest I can get here, is the Tandy professional edge paints made by Fenice, no heat tool. Maybe some of the others can chime in as there have been some other threads about the best way to achieve the look by a hobbyist.

I'm not sure but I think it has to do with copyright laws and registered trademarks. When I was working in precious metal clay, I did some looking into how you could stamp your product. In jewellery, you are supposed to register your mark, particularly if you are stamping it to be a specific content I.E. 18 K, .925 SS. I think it is a way to ensure the quality of the item and for recourse if the content did not match the specified precious metal content. Of course, your actual signature is something different. I seem to recall reading at the time that the leather makers mark was treated like a signature.

The Sandal making book that Tandy sells as an ebook in the library has instructions for molding the sole using sole bend leather. The patterns in it are really dated ( like me,,,,,I remember these types of sandals from the first go round lol) but the basic sandal making info is good. The only problem is locating the cobblers nails. I haven't been able to find a source for them.

earthling 33, I'm with mudruck on this. I have 2 bearman mauls and really like them. I have issues with my elbow and these mauls allow me to work longer with less pain. I emailed with Ed and based on the things I was planning to do, followed his suggestions as to the weight. Mine are 15 and 20 oz. On top of that, they are beautiful :-) Hope this is helpful.

Perfect Leather says on their website that they carry snake. Perhaps if you give them a call you can see about the other exotics you were looking for. http://www.perfectleathergoods.com/index.html

Long Wallet
rosiart replied to rosiart's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks, Wild Bill. It was a goat skin leather second that I picked up at Perfect Leather in Toronto. I think it was originally meant to be a shoe leather, from the sticker. It has the most incredible hand. It is strong, thin and very pliable. Made it almost impossible to skive manually. Beautiful stuff though. I used it for both the interior and exterior. The stitching was done on a vintage Singer 153W100. -
Thanks, Tree Reaper. I initially tried just using an edge finish and copic markers but didn't like the look . Then I tried mixing some Golden acrylic paint with Resolene to seal the edges. It makes a kind of antiqued sort of look that isn't too bad but I am not sure I'm in love with it. I figured I would wear them for a while and see how it holds up.

I decided to try and make some sandals to match the messenger bag. I whacked off the bottom of a cheapy pair of sandals I bought at Winners to use as the outer sole. I had some issues with the veg tan inner sole darkening when I was sanding the edges of the sole. Some of it is likely due to the glue but could some of it be scorching of the leather? I am wondering if I had the RPMs too high on my dremel. So I tried to get creative with the colour of the edges and was not as successful as I had hoped to be. Another learning experience (Sorry the colour is a bit off in the photos. Must be the artificial lighting.)

Check to see what is checked on the left side at the bottom and make sure it doesn't say only the posts I have participated in. Mine for some reason had that checked when it wasn't before. I must have computer gremlins because I know I didn't change it.
