I would really like some advice/input about which machine I should buy. I mostly do small leather goods- wallets, belts, passport holders, purses- that sort of stuff so I know that will not need one of the big 441 clone machines. I was able to buy a while back a Singer 153W100 cylinder arm needle feed machine. My hubby made a basic flatbed attachment for it and it has been a good machine. However, having for years used a domestic Pfaff dual feed machine for fabric sewing, I am really thinking I would like a compound feed machine for the stitch consistency it would provide. My quandary is this-- should I be looking at a flatbed machine since I already have the 153 for circular sewing or should I be thinking a new cylinder arm machine? Space is an issue but I also don't want to purchase something that will not provide a much greater benefit than a flatbed/current machine setup given that the cylinder machines are quite a bit more If I go with a new cylinder arm machine, I am thinking I would prefer one with a little smaller arm diameter than the 153 for tighter spaces and wonder what anyone's experience with the Techsew 2600 or 2800 has been.

Did you order from France or did you find a NA supplier?

I wouldn't have thought of using that particular shade of green to frame the tooling but it sure makes it pop. Very nicely done.

When you do one with fabric, those opposite curves end up fitting into one another. You ease the fabric to accommodate the inside and outside curve on the sides of the panels and clip the seam. Normally if they are done right, the edges end up even, if the pattern pieces were trued. It allows for the fabric to form around the body. I'm not sure how much of that you can do, since your leather appears to be fairly thick. I would try and ease the sections as much as possible then trim as necessary, making sure to maintain the waist line. Maybe someone else has had more experience and can advise you better. I have only done a leather one with garment weight leather backed by coutil so was able to treat it more like a fabric application.

They are much better quality than the other stamps on offer. The Sheridan style ones work well. Just so you know, some of the geometrics run larger than I expected. I wouldn't pay full price for them but at this price, I did pick up a couple more on the weekend. Hope this helps. Also, if you are interested in them, now is a good time to get them as Canadian prices are set to go up this week, because of the lower dollar. The sale prices will be good for this month but the increase is to be 19%.

Nice bag and you will not have to worry about identifying yours amongst the sea of black bags. :-) As you mentioned the dimensions and you're needing to keep within the airline restrictions for cabin luggage, can I ask how much this weighs? I have toyed with the idea but thought it would get too heavy, given the weight restrictions on some flights.

Thanks. I am not so worried about the tearing( in fact it never occurred to me ), but given it is machine stitched, I think the stitching line will hold. I just didn't really like the look of the edges after they were stitched and edgepainted. I like the finished look of yours. My leather was so stretchy I couldn't do any skiving without making a horrible mess so I didn't do any. Kind of figured thick was better than messy since that was all I was accomplishing.

Thanks Monica. I bought that piece just 'cause I liked it. I was glad to have a project to use it for :-) Interiors sure are a time consuming thing. I think if I was doing it again, I would do a binding on the edge of the card pocket section, like TheLoud One did on his.

It's really hard to follow Monica on this one, but here goes. I hadn't signed up for these as I was unsure that I would be able to complete the project given that I was away for most of this month but since I got one finished before the deadline I thought that I would post it. The outer is from Tandy, one of the designer sheets they had on sale before Christmas, so I think it is cow. I made a mistake with the inner goatskin leather that I used. It's about the right weight but is too squishy, it should have been a firmer temper. It was a pain to sew when I got to multiple layers. I added the flap for security, although given the squishiness of the interior leather, I don't think anything would fall out. Monica, I love your wallet and I think the new interior colours are gorgeous. Your scales are incredible!

You can use a creaser on leather with a finish if you heat it. It's not normally necessary with veg tan that has been dampened. It's the only effective way to do a chrome tanned leather and get it to stay at all. That said, no matter how much heat and pressure, some leathers do not hold it very well with standard equipment. For them, I think you need the heating tools from France, I can't think of the name of it right now. Something like a fileteuse? Or a heat press.
