Springfield leather would be one good place to start. They also sell wholesale if you have a business and would be worth talking to. -

Tooling Instruction In Sheridan, Wy
mikesmith648 replied to mikesmith648's topic in Special Events, Contests and Classes
Got the job offer today!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Start in Sheridan on Aug 6th through the 1st of Sept. Can't wait to go and see the people there and maybe learn some "old new tricks" with leather. Hope to hear from somebody there soon. Thanks, Mike -
I guess the first step would be knowing what I should start learning with material wise. Rawhide or lace? And what type of braid should I attempt first?

Looking awesome!!! -
Would really like to learn braiding, but not quite "getting it" from the books I have. Is there anyone that would do one on one instruction to help? I am a travel nurse so as long as I can find a contract in the area, traveling is not a problem. Looking to try to do my next contract in the Nashville / Clarksville area and would be nice if I can find someone in that area. Thanks, Mike

Usually it is personal preferance, but after 40 years of doing leather.............I like it better and have better control with a maul.
-
And it is easier to use than a Mallet I might add..............IMHO

There are several books on how to do it. I have never made one but I do know in "The Art of Making Leather Cases" by Al Stohlman book there is a section in volume 2 on that subject. Mike

I am working the next 3 nights in the ER and then will be off for 5 days. Planning on going to work on my trailer and building the work bench in it so I can do my leather and not have to carry everything in the apartment wherever I go. Also will help keep everything more organized that way...I hope. Once I get it all finished I will post pictures. Planning on using a rolling desk chair with adjustable height and making the bench about 42" tall after reading the posts and suggestions. Also, I am going to wire the trailer for lights and a fan and heater so I can work in comfort. Just plug it in and go! This setup will also keep the neighbors from complaining about all the tapping as I work. Mike
