  1. I lust finished making a plain black belt. I used H.O. leather I just purchased from hide & leather house. I dyed the belt with fiebings pro oil dye. One way I thought to finish it is : buff the belt to remove any dye, then use acrylic resolene. Anyone have any suggestions ?
  2. Beautiful work ! I can't afford the Cambell machine,. It's about $3,000.00 I'm looking to spend about $1,500.00 Any machine out there for that $ ?
  3. I got them a long time ago from , Abbey in UK They are very expensive now, I think they are 10 pounds. Do you want to purchase them ?
  4. I do a lot of hand sewing. I am getting more orders for dog collars & harnesses. Hand stitching takes too long. I am thinking about purchasing a good sewing machine. Most of my customers want studs on the dog collars & leads. In the photo you can see the studs take up most of the leather. Is there an attachment for the sewing machine that lets you sew on the edge of the leather, with the studs in the way ? The leather I use is 10/12 oz. bridle leather, lined with 4 oz. of the same leather. Some customers want 4 oz. suede lining. Some suggestions for type & make of a good machine would be appreciated.

I use a Cowboy CB4500 to sew bridle and veg-tan leather. It sews from about 1/8 inch up to 7/8 of an inch with the standard throat plate. I got it with all the accessories which include special raised throat plates that let you clear hardware, like snaps and shapes, or sew tight downward curves, like stirrups. With these raised plates installed it still clears about 5/16 inch of leather to be sewn.

If you don't think you need to clear shapes or hardware, the flat plated CB3200 will handle up to 1/2 inch of leather.

Either can handle thread sizes 138 through 415.

Here is a photo of the harness I just finished, & dog collars I make.

I use a lot of Metal spots. So when sewing the collars with the spots, what attachments will I need ? Can I use the CB3200 ?

  6. Thought I would start a new topic. I don't know if this has been discussed yet, but here goes. I just finished 3 dog harnesses. My arms & fingers are saw ! I have been stitching for a week. Just a thought, How do you hand stitchers finish off your thread ? I go back 1 or 2 stitches, than go in between the layers of leather, tie a knot, cut thread leaving aprox. 1/2 inch, than tuck it in between the leather, & glue it . It is a lot of steps, but it keeps it from coming loose after time. Lets here some different ways of finishing off the thread ends.
  7. Thanks tntsl, I guess I have to find one used ? Bruce Johnson comes to mind. You said older ones, so it has to be used ?
  8. I'm looking for a good overstitch tool, to make marks in my leather, that looks like stitching. I have 2 types of Tandy overstitch tools. One is sized, 5 per inch etc. the other tool has changeable wheels, to change the size. The single size has worn out at the wheel pin, so it does not work good no more. I'm looking for a good tool that won't wear out, & will make a good stitch mark in the leather, for when I don't want to stitch, just want the look of stitching. Any suggestions ? For a good tool maker.
  9. If you have no luck with W & C direct, try Hide & Leather House they carry W & C leather www.hidehouse.com
  10. You can purchase direct from Wickett & Craig 1-800-TANNERY (1-800-826-6379)
  11. Is anyone having trouble logging onto Ohio Travel Bag's new web site ?
  12. I want to make a harness for my dog. What type of leather is the best to use. Since he will be wearing it outdoors, in all type of weather. I have some nice 8/9 oz. Herman Oak Leather. If I use the H.O. can I protect by finishing it with some to make water resistant ?
  13. That's the type I'm looking for. My customer wanted 1 1/4 inch, I'm sure he will be happy with 1 1/2". That is the type of buckle he wanted. O.T.B. comes through again !
  14. I just finished making a dog collar. The customer wanted a design I have with pink color in it. I had to use acrylic pink to get the right shade of pink. My question is: what should I use to protect the colors from running ? I'm sure it will be in the rain & snow sometime. Here is a photo of the collar.
  15. The Beltman has one in 1.25 inch. There web site has a problem checking out. I emailed them, I'll see if they get back to me. Thanks saints1589
  16. Jackie, I checked OTB, I couldn't find any "black buckles" in 1.25" or 1.50" . I'll even settle for , black gun metal. Could you post the item # for black buckle. craftsman827
  17. Does anyone know where I can purchase BLACK heel bar buckles ? I don't want plastic buckles. I know someone makes them. I seen them on belts. Looking for 1.25 inch heel bar type. here are a couple of photo samples.
  18. Does anyone know where to purchase LARGE rivets ? When I say large, I mean the diameter of the top part, not the length of the shaft. I've been using flat spots, one piece with prongs, I need something for 9 oz. leather. The photo is of the spots I am using now. The prongs are too short for 9/10 oz. H.O. leather.
  19. I found the pattern for the "napkin rings" by: Gene Noland. It was in. "make it with leather" magazine, issue June/July 1973.
  20. What type of leather did you use? Did you dye it ? Great job !
  21. I'm looking for an old pattern from the leathercraft magazine, "Make it with Leather" I can't remember the issue, but it was from "Gino" It was Gene Nolan who had a different project each issue for about 5 years. Here is a photo of the "napkin holders". If anyone knows the issue, please let me know.
  22. Most of us leather workers don't have enough space to store our leather flat. So we roll it up. My question is which way to roll it ? Grain or flesh side on outside ? I store mine flesh side out, so I don't get tan marks from the light. Then the leather is bent ! What about rolling grain side out, covered in packing paper ?
  23. Here is a belt I carved from an old pattern I found while moving to my new house. With matching buckle. American Indian influenced.
  24. Has anyone used the Osborne finest edger #126 ? Can it be compared to a Barry King grooved edger ?
  25. Use Lexol on the flesh side of the leather, about 2" on each side of the fold. Right after applying the lexol, bend the leather carefully . You could put a little on the grain side as well. Like dirtclod said, wet the leather, so it won't crack. If your using 10 oz. , you can skive it at the fold a bit.
