Does anyone one here have experience with a Ferdco 1010? how thick does it sew well and how good are they for breastcollars, headstalls, saddlebages etc. Thank ;you. Ken

I have used my class 4 for 3 years and it is extremely easy to sew with. The control is unbeleivable. Two people have used it to learn to sew on the last year and both were doing a good job in just a couple of hours. Several people in my area have put competition servos on older machines and none of them are a good as the servo on the Class 4. In fact several people have purchased the class 4 after sewing on mine. I would have to see what you are saying to beleive it. Ken

That splitter on ebay is $100.00 higher than the identical one from Weaver. They are pretty good, I have one not like the old good ones. Hope this helps. Ken

I use to get it in up to 346 from Texas Thread Company. That was several years ago but their thread is really good. Ken

Can You Hand-Stitch Through Two 8-9Oz Pieces?
Ken Nelson replied to lightingale's topic in Sewing Leather
A decent awl properly shaprened, should fall through that much leather. I use Osborne awls and it takes a while to get them sharp but sharp and polished, they go through 3/4" with a light push. I know they are high but a Bob Douglas awl is as good as it gets. You would learn to sew by hand a lot quicker and know how an awl should feel. I ruined a lot of awl blades before I learned to get them good enough to work for me. Stohlman's book on tools and sharpening them is a good place to start learning to properly sharpen them. Hope this helps. Ken -
Try using 207 thread on the bottom. Works for me. Ken

The best luck I have seen recovering stolen goods has been to run an ad offering a substantial reward for the return of the stolen merchandise. Someone almost always knows who done it and for the size of reward you have mentioned, they will probably turn the guilty in. Doensn't cost much and I sure know how losing tools affects me. Sorry to hear about your loss. Hate a thief too. Best of luck to you. Ken

I just got a handful (9) stamping tools from Clay Miller. I am so pleased. He is awesome to work with. His tools are reasonably priced. Hope more leather crafters will give him a try. I really don't think you will be disappointed. Ken

Juki 441 Clone Versus Adler 205-370
Ken Nelson replied to Steven Kelley's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Some of the top saddlemakers in the industry use machines from the dealers at the top of the page. They don't have to use them or endorse them, they like them or they would not use them.. My self, I have had a Tippman Boss, Champion narrow throat, luberto's classic, Landis 3, Artisan toro 3000 and a Cobra Class 4. I have also used an Adler 205-370 where I once worked. I currently own a Cobra Class 4 and a luberto's Classic. The only heavy machine in use in the shop right now is the Class 4 and have yet to let anyone sew on it that DID NOT LIKE IT!! In fact several people have bought Class 4's after sewing on mine. Pretty hard to beat and at a great price. Call the Adler dealers I know and I DOUBT, you will get the kind of personal service Steve and Bob will give you. My 2 cents worth. Ken -

Most people draw their own patterns and there are several good books available to help you learn it. Check the tandy web site, and Chan Geer.

Saddle Seat Padding ...again
Ken Nelson replied to GrampaJoel's topic in Saddle Supplies, Tools & Trees
I useed to use a seat foam I was getting from Hadlock Fox tree company, which they no longer can offer. It was 1/8" thick, firm and had cloth on the back of it. I really liked it and so did my customers. I would surely like to find a source for it again. Ken -
Servo Motor To Slow The Machine Down
Ken Nelson replied to Iron Pounder's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I don't know how the two motors compare but I have one of these on a walking foot sewing machine and the control is fine. I beleive the other machine has a built in speed reducer and the control would be better still. If motorized sewwing is new to you, go with a servo and speed reducer. My 2 cents worth. Ken -
Singer 31-15 With Roller For Wallets?
Ken Nelson replied to Iron Pounder's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I beleive most bootmakers that I know use a 31-15 to sew the stitch patterns on boot tops and use it with a wheel instead of a pressor foot. I have a 31-20 that I use to stitch rodeo chaps with and I beleive it is easier to use and does a prettier job than my walking foot sewing machines and I have 3 of them. Just my 2 cents worth. Ken -
Looking for a sewing machine that is capable of sewing at least 1/2 inch. Flat bed will work or cylinder arm. Would prefer a walking foot. Thank you. Ken
