Excellent idea with the pallet truck wheel! My workplace has theirs serviced regularly... Might be able to pick up a part-worn freebie!

Need Help With Flesh Side Of Leather Strap.
humperdingle replied to veedub3's topic in How Do I Do That?
I rub some Aussie Leather Conditioner into the flesh side If I want it 'less fluffy'. Seems to work ok. -
Lol, good read But invest in some veg tan

How Often Do You Feel Like Giving Up?

What kind of things have you been making? -
Hi, bear in mind this is 'split' leather, so not the nice, top surface. I bought some split previously on ebay and hardly used any of it

Tooling? Carving? I'm not even sure what you call it! Anyway, i've had a very cheap set of basic tooling stamps lying around for weeks but have never got round to using them until today. I only ended up using the swivel knife and a shading (beveller??) It's rough, but i'm reasonably happy for an hour's work

A Little Ammo Pouch.

Don't think that would be a major issue... A pic would be great, buddy -
A Little Ammo Pouch.
humperdingle replied to humperdingle's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks, folks. That's interesting, i'd never considered a block of wood for smaller calibres! -
Hi, made this little pouch, moulded to take a 10 round factory strip of .223 centrefire ammo... Approx 4.5mm leather all round.

I use one like this: http://www.buyaparcel.com/pageview.php?page=show_product&ecommerce_stockcode=STA110550&gclid=CLalyfydn7sCFWzHtAodTHMAEg Fixed blade and gives a very solid hold. Change blades often to make cutting very smooth.

Hi folks, might be a daft question here... I've been making some small possibles pouches with approx 5mm thick veg tan. I want to fit a sam brown, but the screw part of the fitting won't reach through the leather to engage with the stud part. What's the best way around this? Can I buy longer screw parts? Do I just try to skive some material from under the screw part? Or is there a nice, neat, quick way?

Hi, welcome from Scotland! Regarding the noise issue... I've found that using one of those dinner trays with a bean bag attached to the bottom of it really helps. A big chunky slab of granite on top of it, and you have a laptop board! It just seems to absorb the impact and reduce noise.

The pic of the pen holder section is particularly meticulously-edged

I have some cheap hole punches up to 3\4" diameter... They were always causing difficulties when trying to remove from thick leather, so tried pushing the cutting edge onto a slab of saddle soap prior to punching hole... Works a treat and the punch just popped out. I was going to try and polish the punches but my sharpening skills are broken :D

Welcome along - I look forward to seeing your creations -
I just made one from a leftover plank of laminate flooring - turns out the bit I had was perfect thickness for iPhone 5! One cut was all it needed.

I made something similar the other day with varied sizes of wooden pulley wheels. Works very well. Regarding the type of post, I used a spare straight grinding stone bit. Drill a slightly smaller hole than the bit and tap it home on a flat surface to ensure it ends up flush and sits well at speed.

Offer it up to a suitable model and measure-up? And make adjustable straps.

I made a belt from thick belly leather... I've been wearing it about 6 months with no stretching so far. It might over time, but it cost me virtually nothing, so not too bothered. It has a very nice natural grain, too.

Pricing Holsters
humperdingle replied to charlescrawford's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I just tried the 50/50 neatsfoot and beeswax mix... Melted nicely in the microwave. Tried it on a piece of scrap belly and wasn't too impressed until I put the heat gun over it as suggested... Wow... Really brings out all of the natural leather grain. I poured the mixture into long silicone icecube trays to set so it'll be easier to use. -

My First Pancake Holster
humperdingle replied to humperdingle's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks - I couldn't think what else to use such thick leather for! Yes, the colour is nice - I got a box full of offcuts - look to be maybe from the back, maybe the neck - which were an ideal shape and size for a pancake holster. The gun does draw fairly well but, not owning the real thing, I didn't consider the full grip issue. I'd say i'll do that on the next holster but there isn't much call for them here!
