Beginner Question About Grooving/ Sewing
Jasonlboyd replied to Jasonlboyd's topic in Getting Started
Very informative. Let me ask, how to you keep your needle threaded if the holes are this tight? I know my holes are much larger than they could/should be, but if I don't do this, it seems like every 4 or 5 holes I have pulled the thread out of the needle and I am trimming to re-thread! Also, if I want to order thread, how do I know what size to order? -
Nice!

I am wanting to make a set of oversized grips for my North American Arms out of leather. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions. Anyone done something of this nature in the past?

Love everything about it. I'm new to leather working so what finish did you use for this? Dye, hi light, and finish? I love that deep color -
I don't realize I could order an Osborne for less an $20. I think I'll be getting one in the next couple of weeks. Beans, thanks for the tip on driving it deeper in the handle.

I know everyone has their own opinions, but I need a recommendation on the best bargin for an awl. I am still brand new and I got the basic sewing kit from Tandy. I got holes punched in almsot 3 out of 4 sides of a checkbook cover before the awl came out of the handle. I know this awl isn't the best, but with plenty of wax and stroping, it was getting the job done. I would love to have a top of the line awl, but not ready to invest a whole lot of money yet. Suggestions anyone?

There is a groover thing that women use to do something with their fingernails that you can use as a groover. I stole one from my wife. Just be easy with it, it's not really heavy enough, but it will get the job done!

Can I get more info on using the toilet bowl ring for finishing?

How Does Your Shop Look Like?
Jasonlboyd replied to RoyalLeatherDesigns's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
My shop currently doubles as our dining room table! I have a few boxes I keep my items stored in and bring them out when I get a chance to work. I would like to eventually get a portable building to use as a shop for leather and other things, but right now, money won't allow! -

If I understand correctly, most people make their stitching groove while tooling the leather. If you stitch it on front and back, how do you ensure that your groves will line up in assembly? Do I just need more practice, or am I missing something simple? It almost seems like it would be easier to groove front, punch holes, then groove the back, then finish after sewing. Is this the proper procedure? Groove, finish, glue, sew?

How Would One Do This? (Money Clip/wallet)
Jasonlboyd replied to dpixel8's topic in How Do I Do That?
I know the tandy kit also has 2 plates of metal that, from what I understand, buffers the magnet in the outsides to help from this? I've found some round magnets and thought about using them backed with a washer for future money clips. -

Will the magnet not wipe the credit card strip being this close together? -
I saw and liked that. Now I just have to wait on my yard sale/ flea market $2 vise to show up!

Welcome. I'm also new but I find myself getting bored with the kits and their lacking quality. I have made an iPhone wallet with card holder, iPod sleeve, and a swivel knife holder for my first projects. I am also considering a checkbook cover and a business card case for my next projects of my own creation. Glad to have you around.

You could just use a bolt with the right size head. Just grind the head smooth.
