  1. thanks for the lovely comments...the whole thing is glued, the 4 string braids cover the joins....3mm lacing use for the smaller ones and 4.5 for the larger front one. cheers
  2. I used this instead of carving on a piece of marble...i dont recommend it!!!
  3. Well, i finally finished the headlight....very tricky project! Not my best carving effort. I couldnt decide if i should carve then mold or mold then carve. I thought if i carve then mold i would lose all the tooling in the molding process. So i decided to mold then carve! I did the carving using one of those shoe makers thingies..it has three metal feet at right angles to each other, but the foot bit is curved so i used that. I think if i had to make another i would say no to any carving.

  13. I thought i would show my latest seat before i have to re-dye it. The fancy seat was the customers design that i tweaked a bit. I personally like the pale antique wash but he wants it a darker brown. cheers
  14. When carving/toolling, i find that it doesnt take long before body bits start to hurt. My left shoulder stiffens up and i get a pain/headache at the back of my head near the top of my neck. I know it is probably my tooling position, but i have tried different heights of benches, chairs etc. I do find myself quite tense when tooling which i think is a byproduct of concentration and constantly remind myself to relax. I remember talking to Peter Main and he told me he could tool all day long!!!!! I have to keep reminding myself....relax...both elbows on the table....dont over extend the neck etc. I was wondering what problems and solutions do the members here have to share? cheers caroline

    Noses

Hi bigdoc....i use veg tanned calf skin...its about 1mm thick, which i think is 3oz for you, sometimes i use 1.5mm. I dont make that many masks anymore, i have trouble selling them, but then again i dont try that hard!!! I think the ball tools are used for shaping flower petals for flowers on hats. I picked up a set off ebay...they are quite heavy, made from brass maybe. Here's a pic of my other 'heads' quite the happy couple.....decorations by daughter! cheers
  19. I like earrings on men, but it depends on the type of earring....i am not keen on studs, but like a more tribal look.

    Noses

Hi Quinn, i too hate trying to mold a nose...it takes a lot of hard work...i find these tools very useful for stretching leather. They are hat makers tools for making flowers. The last photo shows the hairdressers training head that i have cut in half and stuck to a board. It is great for mask making. I also have a couple of heads that aren't cut in half as well. They are hard enough for molding, but soft enough that you can stick pins in to hold leather while it is drying. I have a tutorial on my blog, you can find it here.. http://leatheroo.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html cheers caroline
