i had my car converted to LPG (liquid petroleum gas) about a year ago. The government gives a $2000 rebate for the conversion, so the conversion only cost me $600. The price of LPG is 60c litre. My car drives just as far on LPG as it did on petrol. It costs me about $30 a week in LPG instead of $85 in petrol!!!! Nearly all petrol stations now have LPG..so filling up is no problem. Do you have LPG in the US?

I got all my non leather parts from the hardware store...mostly in the plumbing section..tried to get mostly brass fittings but couldnt get anything for the eyes on short notice. The eyes are PVC (not very steampunk) i think they were drain covers. My friend wanted the mouth piece to open so i used brass hinges and buckles. It was a very steep learning curve and would probably do it a bit different if i have had more time. Tom I love your mask, your eye pieces are exactly what i had in mind but didnt have the time to search for them. Australian ebay no 320313569384. I have started the bidding at $99. the fittings cost about $40 plus leather and about 12 hours work.

Don't forget that being a beef extract it can be used to make gravy. Pan juices, a bit of flour and a small teaspoon of vegemite. If i put too much on my toast i get mouth ulcers!!

A friend asked me to make a "steampunk" mask for a party. He didnt give me much time, so it was a bit of a 'quicky'. Now the friend has taken ill and wont be attending the party. I didnt push him to buy it as he has enough on his plate at the moment. I am now left with this weird creation. I have listed it on fleabay and hope to at least get enough money to cover my cost. The eye bits open and the mouth cover can be unbuckled.

well done mike, the coloring is really good and the shape of the leaves pleasing on the eye. The only think i could suggest is to paint the raw edges of the dangley thingies. I always paint the back and edges..gives it a more finished look.

We just got back from the geelong show. Casey (leathercat) aged 10 and myself both got first place for our wrapped and braided bracelets in the jewelery sections. Casey got first place in the junior section for one of her space paintings and i got second and third for my space paintings. In the open leather section there were only three entries and two of them were mine!!. The other person got first place for a handmade pair of shoes. My masks got second and third. I really wish there had been many more entries, but not this year. Seeing Casey SOOOOOO proud was worth suffering the crowds and the heat. Oh, almost forgot...i airbrushed casey as an alien for the show..see below

excellent work...love the fox..the stamped masks are great...i know how hard it is to do this...all that stamping and then when it comes to molding the shape, the stamping can easily disappear!! great colors!

I live in a city of approx 300,000 people and this week is our annual Royal Show. Lots of exhibits, rides, events etc. There is a large area set aside for crafts of all types. This year myself and my daughter (leathercat) have entered the leathercraft sections and painting section. On thursday we took our pieces to the show ground. I found the leathercraft section and found the member to sign in my work. She opened the page and there was my name and only one other name!! I was sure there would be many entries but apparently not. Over in the junior section, there was no leather section but only "Other Craft", so Casey left her braided bracelet there. In the state i live in, Victoria, we have no leathercraft guild. I know there is a guild in NSW and Queensland. We have no Tandy stores in the entire country. Good leather suppliers in the whole country can be counted on one hand. I have looked for other leatherworkers who might be interested in starting a guild but couldn't find anyone interested. I know australia has produced some very fine crafts people..hats off to Peter Main, the Leatherwood team and of course some fine whip makers, but i hate to think the craft is dying out. What can be done...the interest just doesnt seem to be there. THANK YOU to LEATHERWORKER.NET....i know myself and other aussies rely heavily on LW to get our fix of leather talk. I suppose i can count on getting first or second place at the show!!!!!!
