New Holster for a 1911
Rayban replied to BruceGibson's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Great looking holster...I'm tired of whining about Fiebings dyes, so i won't.....but i do like the workmansship......molding is outstanding.... -
Like most things, I've had to learn the hard way...get the belt size right!!! Now I made the belt to the size I was asked...but what I didn't know was that they gave me their pants size...jeans, in these cases.....these jeans could have been 5 years old for all I know....and us guys know how jeans tend to stretch along with our girth.... It's happened to me twice in the past year...I spend a lot of time making a belt, I'm pretty happy with the outcome, and it's too small...even tho I've made it to the correct size that was ordered. Hate the feeling!!! Lesson learned....ask for the waist measurement, NOT the pants size.

Good point, in fact I was thinking that on my next western type I wouldn't wet-form it as much. Thanks. -
My first holster...

Thanks for all ya'llz kind words.....I really am itching to make another one...if only for the resume in my mind.... Yhe color....oh the color........I've already beaten this one to death but it about how I miss Pro Dye.....Feibings' colors just don't match up ( I know, I know...Feibings made Pro Dye, but WHY then is Feibings TAN toatlly diff. than Pro Dye's TAN????).......plus, on this project, I used W&C for the holster and another famous store brand for the belt, so what do you get, two totally differant colors while using the same dye. But I was quite sure my 9 year-old buddy wasn't gonna mind. Thanks again. -
I made this for a youngster's cap gun....it's not perfect but quite the upgrade from the plastic one that came with the gun. This was a good learning experience, and already know how to improve on things....like maybe make it fit the gun a little better. I look forward to the next one......

I've never had it broken down for me before like that ...but now that you do, it reinforces my thoughts....the horsie's gotta go...

We may be asked to move to an appropriate forum but...as long as you have asked.... I don't make hay, I buy it....last year hay was scarce around here (SE MICH) so it got up to $5 for a small square, some paid up to $7...usually $2.50/3.00 range......while hay is plentiful now, they still are getting $5....they are blaming the high cost of fuel....fuel is costing $2.00 per bale more???? I think not. I also just paid $25 for 100 lbs. of crimmped oats....I'm thinking this horse has got to go.....

That was the first site I went to when I started looking...but I didn't know enough to look for "Garrison" buckle. Thanks!

Can you holster folks direct me to a source for a brass buckle like the one in this picture?
-
I would love to have one of your sheaths like this one, cept w/o the firesteel loop. Is that OK? PM me your address please. Thanks!!
-
Anybody want to trade me something you do in leather for this cool book??
-
BINGO!!!! thanks rdb!!!!

I would like to find a BRASS Ranger Belt set (buckle, keeper, and tip). Either 3/4" or 1" will do......any suggestions???? Thanks ya'll!!!!
-
That's a good idea....

Somtimes an opening of a knife sheath can get pretty thick, like 5-6 layers of 8/10oz. leather.....I've found that drilling thru such a piece works very well for me. And the stitching looks better in the back of the work too. If I try to use the awl, I have to fight to keep the stitching even semi-even on the back

That's a great looking sheath and handle....is the knife not fully inserted in the sheath?? I'd sure like to see a picture of it fully inserted...bet the handle really looks nice against the sheath then..... I keep hoping my source comes up with some Osage (on ebay) but no luck thus far......I love cocobolo but getting a little bored with it.......I need some Orange!!!
-
My opinion is that the guard looks dorky that way...I would grind it off to the contour of the rest of the handle.
-
Great "tips" and advise Bruce.....I'm taking notes.....thanks.
-
Thanks Bob...I'm gonna try to get a few more miles out of this one, then move into something like you mention next.....for the projects I do, this one has served me really well.
-
Epoxy....yeah, that's the ticket...THANKS!!!!

This is my first and only awl. I bought it at Tandy a few years ago...like maybe 18.....the blade is still plenty sharp, but the part that inserts into the handle and thightened down is now worn round instead of diamond shape as it should be. To my surprise, Tandy doesn't carry this handle any more, so of course, no replacement blades for it. Does this one look familiar to anyone....and know where I can get a replacement blade for it??? Muchos gracias in advance...

Git R Done Windy...and show it to us!!

I was inspired to do this one from somewhere on here, it may have been you, so if it was muchos gracias!! That groove is an excellent idea, so thanks for that too.

I just made this one for myself yesterday out of Cocobolo...inspired by another one I saw some where on this forum.....easy to make and it works great...I put it to work this morning....please excuse the sloppy stitching job on the slip.....hand stitching and watching Detroit Tigers on tv don't mix.....
