Why stitch a single layer belt?
Rayban replied to Shorts's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I bet you wouldn't see much of it if it had to be hand stitched.....and stretch on a belt can be a good thing, huh fellas?? -
My first holster, critique away!!
Rayban replied to Rayban's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
...well, it's suppossed to be Fiebings light brown.....I tried a little reducer in it because I knew it would be darker than "light brown".....but when I went over it again to try to smooth it out, it got darker anyway....and I was fighting with a dobber that was falling apart...I've said it before and I'll say it again...I miss Pro Dye...please come back, I've changed!! -
My first holster, critique away!!
Rayban replied to Rayban's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks ya'll...I just may have to line my next one Boomer, and you're right, I'm sure it will look that much better. Just not looking forward to all that hand stitching...I'm basically a pretty lazy guy. well then let's just forget I brought it up -
Well it's my first one for a real gun, let's say....after making several knife sheaths, I found this to be rather simple. Just a bit more leather of course. The belt for this Plinking Rig is on the table now....but I can't wait to make another one of these....kinda have to anyway since I messed up on the stamping on this one. If you see any glaring no-nos, please let me know....

Very good looking job....I think it would have a very custom look if you contoured the opening of the sheath to fit the handle shape at that point.
-
Two things...your hands are telling you that they are not used to doing what they're doing.....just gotta get used to it... Secondly....why are you gripoping the tool so tightly?? All you have to do is hold it at the angle...straight up and down takes no strength at all...loosen up some...the tool ain't going no wherez...

Snakebyte...there's a Tandy store in Westland. I'm in that area (Livonia) on a daily basis. If you ever want to meet there, I'll be glad to show you around and point you to the basic essentials to get you started. I do mostly knife sheaths and I just got a side of leather in to get me going on holsters..... I'm in the market for a gun cleaning kit for my new Ruger Single Six, so why don't you shoot me a price. Thanks, R

Marketing your item on ebay, craigslist, etsy............
Rayban replied to CollinsMS's topic in Marketing and Advertising
I found Collins' first post to be very insightful, as I am no Marketing guy, nor do I intend to be. But if I was interested in diving in full time, his info would be quite useful, and I would have not trouble putting it to use. But as a casual Saturday morning coffee sipping observer to this thread, I can't see where he was "run off" either. I would encourage him to strap on a pair and hang around. I would bet he has much more info that could benefit us all. -
I believe you have have to build the sheath around this knife for proper fit...kinda like I'm doing for this one. I'll post pictures of the finished piece in a day or so....

Lesson in belt making....
Rayban replied to Rayban's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
The leather will only stretch as it has to to fit , right? Besides, there are extra holes, ce? -
Is this machine meant to sew through 3 or 4 layers of 8-10oz. leather? Anybody else on here have one, or knows of these machines?? (Susan said it was OK to ask)

Working Bowie Knife Sheath
Rayban replied to rdb's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Seems like so many are trying to re-invent a sheath these days, with fanciness, bling, inlays, lining, etc.....I also favor the plain and simple good using stuff. Good job. -
Some of my latest holsters
Rayban replied to DaltonMasterson's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
WOW...great work...I love that Cheyenne style of yours. Couple questions; do you make a matching belt for all your holsters? Also, it looks like you've sewn in a welt for your Remington holster, did you do the same for your wife's holster, hard to tell by the picture. Thanks! -
One and a half holster...
Rayban replied to Tina's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Very cool Tina, member, you gotta make belts to match -
I bought these today as part of a set from Tandy. When I got home I realized I already have these two. They are new, never out of their envelope. For sale, $15 includes freight. For trade, you tell me.

Lesson in belt making....
Rayban replied to Rayban's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I wish I had run across this picture before this last belt project. This is PERFECT for long distance sizing instructions. Hope ya don't mind if I use it Boom-Stick. -
Tom, you can grind them rivets off.....VERY CAREFULLY....to replace them or to replace/sew the new loop.

The Holster - finally.
Rayban replied to howardb's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Perfect...I'm going by there today...thanks!! -
The Holster - finally.
Rayban replied to howardb's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Brent, just noticed sumpin.....the contour of your holster looks like it may have been designed so you could use a Mexican loop feature, (like the picture below) as an alternate desgn feature. (?) I'm looking for this pattern, is there a name, number, whatever?? -
The Holster - finally.
Rayban replied to howardb's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
"It was a MAJOR pain handsewing 5 layers of cow. It's purt neer a half inch across that seam." Brent, that is why God made drill presses.....the struggle to stab an awl through that thickness of leather just isn't healthy! Not to mention what it looks like in back.... I bought this little table top drill press on Craigs for $30 and it works great for that situation..... Try it, you'll like it.... -
The Holster - finally.
Rayban replied to howardb's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Brett, very nice work...is that a welt I see along the stitching edge, or are the beers playing games with me?? I've only made one holster so far, and didn't even think of using a welt...is it common/necessary practice? Again, great work, and I can't wait to see the matching belt....hee... -

All great ideas....when you have a warm body in front of you to measure....when getting an order over the internet, it's a differant story.... -
