  1. Pricking irons are not meant to "punch the pricking iron through all the way" the leather. They're for marking where the holes will be that should be made with your awl.
  2. Or it could be that it was a PITA to figure out and no one wants to share the secret because then they wouldn't have a unique item to sell. My guess is this guy that's asked for it has probably never seen one in his life and he's asking for something that doesn't exist.
  3. Depending on the diameter of your spy glass, you'll probably need to make or acquire some curved needles to saddle stitch it.
  4. Not in black in 0.8mm they don't. Sounded like it would be several weeks at least until they had that in stock again...just to save anyone else from having to enquire about that.
  5. 1. I've been working on small cases for a while. That's what interests me right now. 2. I usually work on a computer, so it's usually very intangible. For example, when I fix something, there's nothing afterward to point to and say, "I did that." When I finish a leather project, it's nice to have a finished object. I guess it's hard to explain. Not sure if that made sense. 3. TEXAS!!!

    Small Splitter

i don't know if by "small" you meant "cheap"...if not then get an Osborne 86. should work fine for what you need.
  7. you need to watch Nigel Armitage's saddle stitching in detail video on youtube a couple times or so. you're not doing your stitch exactly the same way on every single stitch. that's why it doesn't look right. your old iron might've masked that your stitching was being done inconsistently. hard to tell since i don't know what you were using for the old one.
  8. https://www.etsy.com/listing/191086290/adjustable-leather-power-creaser?ref=shop_home_active_1 i don't have any affiliation with them.
  9. nah. not of you don't mind it forming splits over time.
  10. you'll probably just have to look at it a long time and reverse engineer it. that's what i do.
  11. turn the item inside out, sew along edges, turn back right-side out when done. should work fine on 2mm leather unless you have a machine that is inappropriate for leatherwork. it will be hard to give recommendations unless we know what it is you're trying to make. seams that would look ok for a bag may not look good for other items.
  12. Stitching first part (gusset to front panel): 15:49 Stitching second part (gusset to back panel): 20:20
  13. actually it's that heated soldering iron with the blade on it that does that. there are several threads about it on here.
  14. well. they (ludlow) are apparently out of black tiger thread in 0.8 and will be for at least a couple of weeks, so i need to find another source for tiger thread or equivalent. last batch i got from Canada took almost a solid month to get to me here in the US. maybe it'll be faster ordering from Abbey?
  15. BTW, I just checked and "Fil au chinois" is French for "Chinese wire". weird.
  16. David - if you'd like to try some #69 machine thread for hand sewing, send me your mailing address and I'll send you some in a few colors to try. It's bonded nylon, but I think I have some bonded polyester in white also.
  17. i didn't say it wasn't "acceptable". i said it would look better if it was all leather.
  18. that is completely incorrect. it is legally the seller's responsibility to deliver purchased goods INTACT and UNDAMAGED. insurance covers the SELLER (SHIPPER)......not the buyer/recipient.
  19. oh, and if they want that damaged leather back (and will split the wrong weight leather), THEY need to pay the return shipping back to them AND the shipping back to you once they send the good hides back. the reason for this is because you're not the one that screwed this all up...they did and you should not be out a penny because they didn't do what they were supposed to do (ship safely and/or insured and follow directions on sending the correct weight leather).
  20. tell them what happened (again via email so you'll have their response in writing, if any). if they do not offer to replace the damaged hides and to split down the ones that were the wrong weight, do a chargeback with your credit card company for the amount of the hides that were damaged and/or incorrect thickness. give them a deadline by which to reply to you with an acceptable resolution. if they try to extend that deadline or just ignore you, take action as soon as the deadline expires. it is the seller's responsibility to get the items you purchased to you intact and undamaged. their failure to buy insurance does not absolve them of that responsibility and they can't say "Well you didn't pay for insurance, so i can't do anything." WRONG ANSWER. insurance covers THEM...not you. i would really like to know who this is so i can avoid dealing with them if they pay that little attention to details on orders. i don't have time for that stuff.
  21. looks alright. i'm not sure about the nylon...would look better if everything was leather. i'd also recommend using two colors that have more contrast with each other...it was difficult to tell you used two different colors in your braid until i looked very closely.
  22. i think in his case he's saying mad = insane.
