As new – two fine Handmade Stamps by Robert Beard New Mexico
skip replied to ghstrydr164's topic in Old/Sold
just curious why you are selling them? I am interested but am trying to think if I would use the tri weave or not, not sure about the pattern it makes and how difficult it is ti use. is the lifter similar to the type that Barry king makes as far as the steepness of the lift? -
Great topic! Thanks for the much needed information.

airbrush
skip replied to bugsy's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
would any one of you mention what you have used your airbrush on, or at least show some of your work that you have dyed using your airbrushes, as well as list some of the reasons for going to air brushe instead of some other way of dying your leather work. I am just not convinced that it will save any time at all. -
what are you kidding me? how on earth did you braid that bozel under a microscope? that is great work I am very impressed I can barely braid with 3/32 leather lace with my big thumbs.

Roy Rogers Gun Belt and Holster Rig

very nice set up, I also liked your explanation of what you did and how you did it. watch the rubie crystals on the buckel as they have a tendency to get lost. again nice tooling and spot job! -
as far as stitching awls go I have used several of the CS Osborne ones with success but for a really nice sharp awl I would contact Bob and Lee Douglas in Sheridan Wyoming. they are very sharp and ready to go out of the box. they are a little pricey but are worth it if you consider the ammount of time it takes to sharpen the Osborne tools to the same standard that Bob keeps. hope this helps

Just a couple more questions, where did you get the Press did you make that yourself? or is an expensive purchase from another company? it looks like with a couple of modifactions it could be a clicker also. if it is your own design would you mind sharing the build up of the press itself? and the list of parts needed. BTW nice tutorial of doing a holster. I must say by doing it the way you outlined seams like a short process and very quick and straight forward. Thanks for sharing!

JERI I believe that there is a furtuna band knife skiver on ebay right now under the leather tools section you ought to take a look I believe the asking price is a mear $800.00 I cannot say anything good or bad against it as I don't own one, nor have I ever used or even seen one before. Good luck in your quest for the new tool for 2008

As a Business owner and a customer of Tandy Leather I would have to say they rank up there with Cabela's and Nordstroms as far as service goes. their managers are truly people that enjoy making people and especially their customers happy. About six months ago I needed some Black Antique for a customer's belt the tooling was done and I was out of Black antique. Knowing that Febings isn't going to make it any more I was trying to get a big 32 oz jar of it. I ordered it from my Tandy dealer and she couldn't find it any where. she after a month went by found a four oz jar and sent it to me free of charge because it took her so long to find it.even though it took a month to get what I needed she didn't have to give it to me for free. that is service and I will continue to buy several items there because of that kind of service.

that is some cool work Freak. I like the contrasting colors. it just proves to me that there is more to leather work than just flowers and scrolls. very nice!

I have some horse hair and was going to do somthing just like that with it but haven't found the time as of yet. just curious what are you using as a base for your knot and what do you charge for them and does it take you long to braid the knot? I know lots of questions but what do you expect from an open forum like this. thanks Johanna and your staff.

thaks for the great information I will look into it further when and if I can generate enough to pay that much for one. I can see where they would save time and effort when cutting out parts for what ever type of production you are doing. its just comming up with that much money at one time. again thanks for all the great information.
-
is the horsehair looped through the leather fob? and what type of knot would you call that? the know looks really uniform and even. nice

very nice work, I too had a question about the background/packing tape. but question your comment about the use of rubber cement? have you had problems doing it that way? I have used a piece of plexy glass and hve used rubber cement to keep the leather from straching as well as moving. let me know about the pitfalls of doing that.

Great topic, I have been looking into getting a clicker as well but the initial cost is just a little out of my reach. I have tought about building my own with some heavy I beam material with just a simple floor jack for the hydraulics but just haven't got around to it. For those who have clikers post some pictures and name the manufacturers and prices paid for them so we who are looking can get a better idea of what is working for you and possiably would work for us as well.

MOST AMAZING KNIFE SHEATH!!!
skip replied to SCOUTER's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I am not sure about functionality but WOW! that is some beautiful work. I think of some of the work I have done that was iffy at best but I would say that it is my hope that I can aspire to be able to do that kind of work someday. I would wager that anyone who looked at this sheath that were amazed at the detail that went into making a piece like that. Those who have commented on it not being functional are probably just a little jealous of its beauty and needed to knock for its functionality. That my fellow leather workers is a piece of ART not just a knife sheath. -
I have been using walmart brand foam brushes for painting; using them for dying the edges of the saddles and tack items that I make, you have to be rather careful because th brushes hold a lot of dye and it can drip or run if you get it too heavy. the nice thing about them is the cost is about $1.00 for a bag of 20 or so brushes. good luck

For Hand sewing I have found that putting my awl into some saddle soap helped a lot more that just using wax but I have tried both. and either is better than none at all.

if my first project turned out that nice I think I would have possibly started my business earlier in life. looks great keep up the great work. -
I am in awe of your work it is truly amazing. please keep posting pictures, as for leather work and the creation of art work as you have posted as well as mentioned it is a fantastic medium to work with and each person will see a different item or piece of art out of the same piece of leather. thanks for sharing!

knife handle and sheath
skip replied to steveb's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Hey Steve that is very nice I like the way you pebbeled around to give the backgroeund texture. What kind of money do you ask for a knife sheath like this one? -
you mentioned that the backgroeund was done with a pebbler, or pebbeleld look to it. did you make that tool yourself or could it be one of Robert Beard's? the seat looks great!!!!

those knife sheeths are nice. welcome to the board

very nice work just curious how you got the fading lighter color, and the process you used to get such a rich look to your work.
