Here is my failed attempt, made out of sheep skin. My first mistake was using too soft and too thin a leather, and then using a thicker veg-tan for the closure. Folded and laced the sides to try to give it a little more rigidity. Didn't really work. Also messed up measuring the closure, so they don't line up properly. Next time will definitely use a thicker veg tan for the whole thing.
There's also vetrinary costs to consider, housing the beasts, inspection and storage costs if you plan on selling the meat or milk, not to mention the man hours involved. Livestock farming is a labour of love.
I would suggest asking a farmer. Rules and regs vary slightly from province to province.
Knowing one or two dairy farmers in Ontario, it's not a cheap thing to start up, nor to maintain.
I'll admit I know nothing about turning, but looking at a leather handled maul, it looks like there's most likely a metal rod that goes through the entirety of it. That would give it strength, rigidity, and mass.
Personally I would get it checked and if it is legit, hold onto it. It's surprising what you can find in second hand stores. I scored an older legit Burberry London purse in a Value Village for $20CAN
Depending on what you're looking for, I've found I really like the Yamaha cruisers. I'm thinking that when I finally upgrade, my next bike is going to be a Bolt.
