February Keep Making Stuff Challenge
Tinkerton replied to thefanninator's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Here is my failed attempt, made out of sheep skin. My first mistake was using too soft and too thin a leather, and then using a thicker veg-tan for the closure. Folded and laced the sides to try to give it a little more rigidity. Didn't really work. Also messed up measuring the closure, so they don't line up properly. Next time will definitely use a thicker veg tan for the whole thing. -

Going to have to restart mine. I messed up somewhere, and now the closures don't line up. -
Cost Of Raising Cows To Make Leather?
Tinkerton replied to DavidL's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
There's also vetrinary costs to consider, housing the beasts, inspection and storage costs if you plan on selling the meat or milk, not to mention the man hours involved. Livestock farming is a labour of love. -

Cost Of Raising Cows To Make Leather?

I would suggest asking a farmer. Rules and regs vary slightly from province to province. Knowing one or two dairy farmers in Ontario, it's not a cheap thing to start up, nor to maintain. -

Your tooling is absolutely beautiful! -
I'll admit I know nothing about turning, but looking at a leather handled maul, it looks like there's most likely a metal rod that goes through the entirety of it. That would give it strength, rigidity, and mass.

Does anyone have experience using Ramie thread? If so, how well does it hold up compared to synthetic or linen?
-
Did you put a core in it or is it just the straight leather?

I'd love a copy of the pattern as well, please. They look wonderful!

How's it coming along?

Made this for my sister's boyfriend for Christmas. The writing wasn't as clear as I would have liked, but overall I'm pleased with how it turned out.

That is freaking adorable!

New "biker Soul" Long Wallet

Gorgeous work. I really like the heart and engine combo as well. Where did you get that awesome v-twin concho? -
For mine, I found a cheap second hand vest that fit me well and used that as my pattern.

Personally I would get it checked and if it is legit, hold onto it. It's surprising what you can find in second hand stores. I scored an older legit Burberry London purse in a Value Village for $20CAN

These are lovely. How big are they?

Hey Dwight, what wood works the best?

Depending on what you're looking for, I've found I really like the Yamaha cruisers. I'm thinking that when I finally upgrade, my next bike is going to be a Bolt.
