Hi Point gun
plinkercases replied to Oppenheim's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I have made holsters without the gun but asked for full size tracings and a few key dimensions then patterned it, made it, Did a first rough mold out of the pocket by hand or with a "close" form factor gun, sent it... then talked them through the wet molding. They seem to have been very happy with the results and had fun being part of the process. they get a little ownership and bragging rights. Not ideal but..... Found some before and after customer molding shots. granted I tend to cut my patterns tight but he was please and it sat where it was patterned to sit and based on rig he said he liked the look of. -
My first western rig
plinkercases replied to immiketoo's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Fantastic stamping work. I would love to see more pictures showing the rig in its entirety or at least larger sections to get the full sense of the patterns. Amazing. -
Well folks the post here for the Webley pattern worked so well.... Anyone patterned the WWII Russian Nagant 1895 holster? Not sure how close the Nagant is to the Webley MK6 and if the form factor was the same I could adapt the Webley holster pattern for straps and ammo pouches etc....but no sure on the guns' similarities.... Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Webley Mark6 Holster Pattern?
plinkercases replied to plinkercases's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks dragonawke. I have found a pattern for the same style he sent a picture of so it is up to him to see if he wants to "risk it". -
Webley Mark6 Holster Pattern?
plinkercases replied to plinkercases's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
6 inch barrel. When they say "original" they aren't talking military historical accuracy actually. They just mean like the old style leather ones you see when you Google. Flap and strap and Sam Brown stud, Not a custom design. Any ideas on a pattern source. they are now getting cold feet thinking I can build it without the gun.... not true but.... -
How Do I Achieve This Distressed Leather Technique?
plinkercases replied to Chad Von Lind's topic in How Do I Do That?
It mostly depends on what you are making and how you plan to make it..... not trying to be saucy really. The order of operations depends on how and when you shape in the process, edges than cant be burnished when assembled, tooling that cant be done once shaped or assembled..etc..... that is why there is not one answer fits all... single edges can be burnished before but stitched together edges after assembly etc... Think though how you are going to build the piece and you will then know the order to do things. And like all of us you will sometimes get it our of order and either have to start over or carry on and work it out as you go. And always try to remember your mistakes. -

JLSLeather... I understand why the stich around the slot but why does it not connect to the outer stitch line at the top edge of the holster (other than cosmetic)? You seem to know so...? share please? -
First Snapcake Holster Ever
plinkercases replied to Boriqua's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
very nice and now I know two new things: 1) what a snapcake holster is... never heard that term before, and, 2) some frogs are pink -

very cool. Nice touch stopping the stich on the inside of the loop slots.... other than style was there a reason? -

Singer 96K51 Presser Foot Conversion Kit Question
plinkercases replied to plinkercases's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I know those aren't the needle I am using but I will see if I can get some. There was a pressure foot that came with it from the old cobbler but the attachment point is different than the on the presser wheel so perhaps I can mod the foot or see if I am missing something in between. I had a blast this weekend trying to sew a long zipper with the wheel rather than a foot! luckily it was just a fun personal knock off project making chaps out of an old sheep skin coat so I wasn't worried about the goofy stitch line. I do need to get a foot on it though... and some zipper tape.. and patience.... Thanks for the help. -
Singer 96K51 Presser Foot Conversion Kit Question
plinkercases replied to plinkercases's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thanks Wiz, Right now it has just a presser wheel. not a foot with wheels. but I will try to raise the wheel and back off the tension and see if I can get any more material under it. The machine can handle the thickness power and needle size wise - its just getting it under the presser. I would be fine with a straight foot and it doesn't need any rollers. I am note doing show upper work and lots of tight curves. I straight foot came it but the attachment to the presser rod is all different than the wheel. hmmmmm -
Greeting's all and Happy New Years. I have a singer 96K51 from a custom show shop which is tricked out with a presser WHEEL for tight radii and thin shoe upper leather. It is a great machine but I remember a thread here a while ago (but cant for the life of me search and find it) where a member mentioned there was a conversion kit to install a presser FOOT and allow it a little more clearance foot to plate for slightly thicker materials. I recall even emailing a machine vendor (cant recall which one was suggested and cant find the email so...) I hope this collective memory here can help me out. Thanks in advance for any help you may offer.

Single Action Pair
plinkercases replied to dikman's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Just stumbled on this old thread and I agree with lots here: Great first rig and great choice of complimentary hobbies!! I am also into CAS here in Ontario and make my own leather. Nice to know you are actually involved in your own rig. How has it been going? Any more newer rigs made? -
Vaquero Holster With Coin Inlay
plinkercases replied to tclaridge's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Very nice. Good edges and stitch work. -
I concur with Thornton. You aren't setting the stamp corners consistently in the existing adjacent stamps' corner impression. That will help prevent drift as it "locks" the rows together to keep the rows both parallel and the weave line (the over under impression) straight. Still not as easy as it sounds but that should help a lot. Use a big stamp and just practice that on a wider field of leather. Newer Tandy stamps have lousy definition on the edges and corners and that make it harder to index them. older or better made stamps are "crisper" will almost find their place in the existing impression. Also I use my old deck builders trick which is set a very light line at the original guide line angle ahead of the stamp row every now the then and measure to it then slowly make any correction to get back on track. ..... and finally as people here have told me repeatedly the 3 best things you can do are practice, practice and practice. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. You are already getting better results and glad you asked the question.
