I started back up after monkeying around with some real bad holsters when I was a kid. I made some Epipen cases for my kid and I and then found my old airgun and was off to holster land again!! and I have a lots of prototypes lying around too.... JLS's primer sheet has a lot of key safety points in an visual excellent summary. Here are a few books which also give lots for good practical observations on what makes a good (safe and useful) holster not withstanding any fancy tooling or dying.. which comes after the holster design and construction is safe and solid. Help finding a post that had a section dwg of seat inlay
plinkercases replied to plinkercases's topic in Saddle Construction
rdl that is it thanks! What was the original post title? I have an old saddle I want t try to rebuilt and it had an inlay seat that is toast... not that I have the time to do it but I am still thinking about it! I am also a Canuck. I am in Ontario. Where are you located? -
Folks this always happens to me. I cruse through a post and see something and then cant find my way back to the post if I haven't marked it. So last 2 week or so I saw a post where a saddle maker had included a section drawing showing the build up of his seat inlay.. I think the top side was suede. It show foam layers (even mentioned what was used as the padding) and backers and how it was sewn to the main seat cover.... really would like to find it again. I have trying all kinds of key work searches with no luck. Anyone know this post? Thanks in advance.

A simple basketweave holster
plinkercases replied to Boriqua's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Interesting choice not to use a cammo to boarder your weave.... very straight forward... I may try this approach if the right piece presents itself. And beautiful finish on it. Well worth the time even if only you know the time! -

First tri folding wallet.
plinkercases replied to grommit's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I really like the look of this. Thanks. And if you were serious about doing this with one hand then you should be very proud of the results. And if you weren't.. you should still be proud. My only comment about the stitching is that in one close up it appears you may have the angle of your awl wrong in relative to the stitch line. It look perpendicular rather than the "diamond" lines being parallel. See below from Al Stohlman's explanation: If this is the case a correction will help your stitches lay in nicely -
Old school Jordan style holster
plinkercases replied to stu925's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Very nice. One of my very first holsters was a Jordan style as well.... for my old Crosman 38C airgun. -
John Deere Inspired Holster
plinkercases replied to jdconn's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Holster may be John Deere but the gun looks like Ford/New Holland! -
Thanks for the info. I learn something new and old on every project!!! I am always amazed when making a new custom piece that every project goes through stages where I think it is junked and I need to start over but if I keep going the leather seems to lead me to the end of the project and it works out,,, often not exactly as I had envisioned but better in some way. I think that is what working with an organic material is supposed to be like. Keep up the good learning and sharing thanks.

Lion Holsters
plinkercases replied to silkfatblues's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I am also impressed and would like to know where you source you retention hardware? -
It looks like you used a tan harness leather is that correct? if so I also got fuzzy edges in some cases and the bevel knife cuts would cut the tan surface so left un oiled there would be "white" lines at the tooling and cutting like there seems to be on yours in the first pic of the "more pics" posting. Or am I out to lunch? I like that pattern holster pattern. It and and the carving pattern looks like the famous one from the cover of Packing Iron. Very nice thanks for showing it off.

IWB holster set for EDC items
plinkercases replied to plinkercases's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I always tell people who inquire that if they can describe, draw or send me a picture "like" what they want I will try to build anything at least once! And with the exception of some stock pattern holsters for a particular airgun I don't think I have made the same thing twice... even when trying! Its fun sending folks something of which there is only one in the world. Just wish I had more time at the bench, I have so many idea of things I want let alone some jobs on the patient client list for some time now. The last 1.5 years has been taken up with family, church, work and other service commitments and the "Jobby" has taken the smallest piece of the pie... for now anyhow. -
Horizontal Knife Sheath Retention

Snubby that's a nice sheath.. I also want to see the front of your devil/skull horn handled mug on you bench. -
Horizontal Knife Sheath Retention
plinkercases replied to krominix's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Personally when I have made sheaths that require retention without straps I run up past the bolster/guard and mold around it all. Yup less handle exposed for a "combat groip" however with practice you can still increase you grip as the handle clears the leather. The owner is a real bush guy and these are used not displayed and he has provided no negative feedback on this approach. I don't always go this far up but that was based on the owners request. -
A new Holster with a
plinkercases replied to OLDNSLOW's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
When I have had over glue I discovered that a few gentle passes with 600 wet/dry sand paper, dry in this case, before staining and it takes the colour just like the surroundings. Dwight thanks fro the strap tip. -
I think I really like the idea of the purposeful (?) "keyhole" look in the belt slots on the1911 commander. I have always been challenged making the slots with either hole punched ands and cut or with bag/oblong punches... I guess I could always invest in a 1.75 inch bag punch. But that does look neat thanks.

Mare's Leg rig
plinkercases replied to plinkercases's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
No doubt. Unless I called a timeout while undoing the snaps!! I asked my customer if this was for action/speed shooting or just safe carriage at the range and he opted for the second hence the snap retention. the lower strap is of course the thigh strap. I would love to see your fast draw version if you don't mind. -
This was fun since I didn't have a weapon to work with I modified by kids broken Red Ryder to the profile of a Henry Mare's Leg in 22lr and this is what happened.
