Cris- He uses a 40 w laser but only uses enough power to cut cleanly. I would either increase the hole size or, what I do, is case my leather and lightly scrub with a sponge. It takes off the charred flakes. I wax my sinew too and it doesn't seem to pick up any black when I sew. Hope that his helps. pete

My friend that I do tooling for just bought a laser. He cut out wallets and business card cases for me to sell at gun shows, etc. They are doing great and I wanted to offer them to others here for those who would like a simple project but are disappointed with TANDY kits as I was when I began. These are laser cut including PERFECT stitching holes. The beauty of the laser is that they are not only exact, but the "burn" on the edges are black from the laser and require almost NO BURNISHING to get perfect edges. I just use a little saddle soap and rub a few times and they are shiny and black! Better than I have ever been able to do. They are 4/5 H.O., tool great, no blemishes, and sell well for $40.00. The insides are brown pigskin and the holes are lasered as well so they line up perfectly. All you need to do is finish and sew. I will send for $18.00 in the US if you are interested. Here are some that i have made and will sell at the next gun show here in March.I don't have paypal but I trust the good folks here as I have bought from many here before so a check is fine. (I'll print your name if you stiff me!! heh! heh! Let me know if you are interested and I will see how many I may need and contact my partner to see when he can begin cutting. Please note a wallet or business card as they are different sizes.

Is there a "formula" for making a rope edge with a figure beveler i.e. the width in relation to the tool, and, the spacing? I ask because I made a wallet for someone awhile ago and used the pointed beveler and it came out perfectly like a rope edge. The next time I couldn't get it right and I have been using up a lot of practice leather to get it. It seems that I go up one side and when I flip it, the rope is uneven and there is an overlap no matter where I do the second pass. I have tried overlapping the "point" exactly in between the pass on the other side, off setting it a little, right across from the first pass, etc. and it isn't smooth at all. I have used different widths and more space between the points etc.... Any suggestions? pete

Background Paint Color

reduce the width of the inside piece by 2x the thickness of the leather. glue up 1 side and fold slightly as you match and glue to the other side. You're wanting to glue it in with a gentle (roughly) 90 degree fold. i BELIEVE that the measurement is correct. Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong. I always glue and fold and then trim as I don't use pre-cut patterns. pete -
What's Your Favorite Size Basket Weave Stamp For 1.5 In Belts?
pete replied to IngleGunLeather's topic in Leather Tools
I personally think that basketweaves look better on the diagonal. Gives you more room too. pete -

did you dye it all black and then cover it with the green? pete -
what intrigues me the most is the shape of the yoke. I don't know if you can improve on the 100's of knives out there, but the yoke LOOKS like it would be very comfortable !!! You might have a market on the yoke if it fits the shaft of the most common and popular knives!!!I'll be glad to try one and send it back with a critique. I have leatherwrangler and chuck smith knives. I'm serious about the offer. I would buy one if it feels as comfortable as it looks. pete

SOOOOOooooooo.... what was your opinion on the knife? I've not heard from anyone who has one and wold love to hear their take on the concept and use. I'de love to try one if I had a chance as I can "feel" it in my mind, but would love to cut some leather with it. Please give us your take Bob. pete

You say that you have a book. Where can I see or purchase it?

I sewed it along the inner line up to the arrows that show the width. Tooled and antiqued it and it came out really well, and the edges burnished great.pete

Novice Asks, "which Weight For Tooling?"
pete replied to nractive's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I would call Springfield leather and order a 4/5 oz. half shoulder. the thickness will be quite even all over and there will be plenty to do a wallet with enough left over for another project. relatively no wasted lethe on a shoulder. pete -
get a bisonette edger. It's curved and goes around corners. pete

Is that a binding around the cover, or is it a beveled line that's sewn? What antique/background dye (colors) combination did you use? I see it is on most all of your work. Really nice contrast! pete

It would be my pleasure to show you. And no, I quit playing bluegrass and country a few years back. Now I use my custom 5 string elec. mandolins for Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, Van Morrinson, T. Monk, Oliver Nelson, George Benson, etc. Got tired of the bluegrass scene and country hasn't been "country" for a LONG time. Let me know if you are ever up this way. pete
