  1. Have you considered contacting the Royal Navy? They probably won't be able to tell you much about preserving the scabbard, but I'm sure they will be interested in knowing the sword still exists. If you are a direct descendant you may be entitled to the title, which must be good for business.
  2. They look very similar to romano/celtic shoes. Lots of similar patterns here .
  3. Beeswax and lots of rubbing works well, but try it on a sample piece first, not sure what effect the friction will have on super sheen.
  4. Could be difficult getting the right colour for patinated bronze and pigeon c**p, I'd go for the original heraldic silver or black like Macca's crest.
  5. Try a light touch with fine grade sandpaper and a heavy layer of acrylic.
  6. Lots of free paterns on the Tandy website http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/projects.asp
  7. It's down to availability and what your wallet can stand. Granite tends to be a bit more expensive, but you may be able to get an offcut or broken piece cheap from a monumentl mason.
  8. Might be a good idea to get veg tan belt strap of appropriate width. Cheaper than buying a shoulder or side and you have nice straight edges.

  14. Has Nevada decided 1776 was a big mistake and applied to become part of the commonwealth? I must have missed that bit on the news.
  15. Utility knives are good for opening boxes, rotary knives make good pizza cutters, for cutting leather you need a good sharp head knife. Once you've used one you'll realize why they've been essential since the middle ages.

  18. There are braiding tutorials here , here ,this one and Drac's exellent tutorial here . What leather to use depends on what you are making, sheep nappa tends to be stretchy and not too strong, goat veg tan is thin and suprisingly strong, cow veg tan is good for most things and kangaroo is great but expensive. I'll leave rawhide to someone who is west of the Pennines. You can buy ready made lace or have a go at making your own (It's easy), Scouter has something to say about it here . Hope this helps.
  19. I made one from an old saw blade, pic in this section. got the idea from here (july 96). Not the prettiest tool but it works for me.
  20. We're out of luck Tom, shipping to this side of the pond is 5x the cost of the knife.
