Briefcase-Floral Tooled
David replied to Double U Leather's topic in Satchels, Luggage and Briefcases
Very, very nice. Absolutely first rate! Dave -
Jimbob the inner row of lacing is very soft kangaroo, you can't even feel it. The calf skin lace, yeah, that will rub you raw.... but not this stuff. Dave

My take on the situation is you did the right thing. Dave

I had a interesting one this week. I had my first seat returned to me.....it was too fancy! I sent pictures all during the construction, and he loved the finished product when he saw the pics. I would have been real up set but within a day I'd traded the old seat for a Ruger .357 revolver. I'm building him another "less fancy" seat. I've attached a pic of the seat that he returned. Customers come in all shapes, sizes and temperaments. This one was in law enforcement and they are usually the best. I decided to roll with the punch on this one. Dave

Best Paints To Use For Seats And Final Finish
David replied to troy's topic in Motorcycles and Biker Gear
If the paint is still on there, they haven't worn through the neat lac yet.....it is coming. -
This topic has been discussed several times here....Should a product like olive oil or motor oil be used as a leather treatment. My own personal opinion is, no. Olive oil can go rancid rather quickly once opened and being familiar with that smell I would not put it on something I was intended to wear. You can prolong the life of olive oil by keeping it in the fridge..... but that isn't too practical for a gunbelt and holster. My response would be the same on motor oil. The petroleum will quickly degrade leather, causing it to debond and just fall apart. All that being said, that's a nice job on the holster. JMHO any other input? Dave

Best Paints To Use For Seats And Final Finish
David replied to troy's topic in Motorcycles and Biker Gear
I would put the life expectancy of the paint on a seat at less than 3 months for below average use. But if the owner is a daily rider of his bike, with the bike sitting in the sun, a couple rainy days, etc. The paint will be looking pretty shabby in a month. My advice is stick to dyes and antiquing. This will show less wear and can be freshened up as needed.... JMHO Dave Theobald -
Best Paints To Use For Seats And Final Finish

Here's my two cents also. It doesn't matter what brand of paint you use, what top coat you put on or what you use to set the paint. Eventually it is going to end up on the seat of someone's jeans. Dave Theobald -
Playing with colors is fun.....enjoy.

Interesting, I have never used glue on any of my seats. I guess the bend is not sufficient enough to need it? I use 8oz. veg. tanned. Dave Theobald

Jimbob, I have never used a gel pad. How thick are they? What sort of padding do you inlay them into? I use 3/4" neoprene on my seats; it is available in 3 densities.... Most of my guys prefer the hardest of the padding.... which was surprising to me. My seats see a variety of use from bar hopping to long haul..... The guys here in Cincinnati ride my seats to the smokeout every year which is a considerable ride......it is in North Carolina. Still hoping to see pics of your seats. Best to you, Dave Theobald

Tooled Panel For The Lc & Sj Sep/oct Issue Cover.
David replied to hidepounder's topic in Floral and Sheridan Carving
The cover is beautiful; but, I already told Bobby that on Facebook. I wanted to put in a plug for the book. I bought a copy some time ago and I'll be using what I learned when I begin the long project of replacing the seats on some antique dining room chairs....One of those in the future after retirement projects. It is a great book get one for your library. Dave Theobald -

Seat Based Off A Traditional Back Piece From The 40's
David replied to Josiah's topic in Motorcycles and Biker Gear
I generally use holes 1/2 the width of the lace.... 1/4" lace through 1/8" hole. The seat looks good Dave -
That is probably a factor of the brush that you are using..... Make and model? best to you, Dave Theobald

The seat looks really good. I've had no luck with color on seats. Let me know how it looks in 6 months. My bet is that the color is on the back of someone's jeans. Dave
