Does anyone have up close photos that illustrate this phenomenon of twist going in the right direction vs. twist going in the wrong direction? This is a detail I have not noted myself, maybe I've been lucky and used the correct twist for my particular stitching style, or maybe I just didn't know what I should be looking for... Thanks! YinTx

I wish I knew. I have purchased a couple of lots of leather, and this was one of the sides I ended up with. And there is only one side of this color in the lot! So I won't be able to make too many things with it. There was a nice blue side in there too, and I made a similar style tote with it, see this thread: Sorry I couldn't be more help! YinTx -

So, after a year and a half at this, I finally feel like I can post something in the Show Off section! I know it isn't perfect, has some things I can do better next time like skive the side where the binder covers the stitched section, and I will still reburnish the handles (got ahead of myself taking pics...) and still haven't perfected the binder overlap, but overall I am pretty happy with this one. Hermann Oak leather for the straps and binder. Waxy pullup green leather for the body, hand painted liner (No, I did not do the hand painting myself.. ) More Posted photos here: Please let me know what you all think! YinTx

I am fairly accustomed to power equipment, having used it since I was 12 years old. However, I am not accustomed to spinning things up like razor blades that were not intended to be spun up. I have an aversion to that sort of thing, just me. When you look to purchase rotary blades, they tend to be pretty general in descriptions of their metallurgy: titanium, sks-7 alloy, high carbon, etc. Even saying SKS-7 isn't specific it would seem, as there are a range of heat treatments that result in everything from a tool steel for dies, to railroad spikes, bolts, industrial boiler tubes, etc. Which leaves the end buyer, me, a bit confused when it comes to the plethora of choices available and the not always specific marketing associated with them. The same is probably true of most knives/blades, hence the never ending disagreements around which material is best for what. I guess if I am cutting 10 oz leather with a rotary blade, I'd need something different than if I am cutting silk. Anyhow, ramble off. for now. YinTx

A lot of quick responses, many thanks. Unfortunately, I don't have a lathe set up, and the thought of a razor spinning at any rate of speed kinda worries me, so I might forgo that technique. I will try the loosened blade method if my holder will do it, sounds viable.... Any thoughts on the best metallurgy for new blades? YinTx

So I have read some of the content in this section, and it has been useful. But I do have one blade that I am vexed with. How do I sharpen my rotary blades? I see rotary sharpeners, but seems like they make their own simple profile, and in many cases users complain the end result is worse than what they started with... And what is a good material? I see folks hawking everything from titanium to SKS-7 Tungsten Alloy, whatever that may be... Thanks, looking forward to hearing the thoughts of everyone on this.... YinTx

I have received a lot of leather, a few pieces of which I need to let go to someone else that is willing to put it to good use so it isn't sitting around my shop waiting for me to figure out how to use it. This particular piece is some really heavy sole bend leather, with the edge trimmed straight. It appears to be 15 to 16 oz veg tan (roughly 1/4"), likely from Tandy, they seem to sell it for $125-$159 each side. It measures about 56"x33", judge for yourself by the rulers in the photo. I have included one photo of the back, and one of the front. Tried to do an edge image, but limited to size of posting. Perhaps it'll let me put one in later. If I did tooling, I'd probably keep this one, but I don't know how yet.. so ... Selling it for $75 + shipping.

Boriqua, I finally broke down and hand stitched a belt with Hermann Oak leather, dyed vinegaroon black, and with blue linen thread. Looks great, I've been wearing it every day since April, abusing it with a plastic cell phone holder, tossing it about, not a scuff on it, looks fantastic, didn't stretch at all, very comfortable, and looks great. After I made it, I wondered why the heck I waited so long to make myself a belt! All the other crappy belts have been relegated to yard work duty. Do yourself a favor, make something nice for yourself. It doubles as a sales pitch everytime someone asks about it! YinTx -
It is a little stretchy, but not much. I was able to tear it on a 1/2" width, but it was a bit of effort. I'm going to assume then sheep, and use it as a liner for something. Thanks for the input, everyone! YinTx
