From the album: New Project
Today's progress. Lots of other things going on, so happy I could get this far. Will have to wait on my new stitching irons to get here before I start stitching this one up, I am excited to try them out on it. YinTx© YinTx

From the album: Leather
Anyone know what this is? -
Cseeger and Tugadude, Yes, I am actually looking for both styles. There are some instances where I would like to use the "hole punch" style irons, so I appreciate the link and the review of the irons that do this. I will probably get some. I did watch all of Armitage's videos as they covered exactly what I am trying to understand. Most of the time, I would like to use the awl version, so I needed a pricking iron that marks an angled slot style mark on the leather. I believe this will help me with controlling the angle of my awl when piercing the leather to make the back of my stitching look more consistent. There are many items I plan to make where using a hole punch method will be unwieldy at best, and some of the thread sizes I plan to use (such as Fil Au Chinois 432 and smaller) will not work well with the large holes the punches leave, so I need to improve my hand stitching to the point of perfection. To this end, I have ordered some Osbourne and some Dixons, and eventually may break down and get some Blanchards for the smaller work, we will see. If anyone has in between sizes they are interested in selling, I am still interested! Thanks again, YinTx

Steadybrook, Thanks for your interest. The Ritza thread is waxed. This is thread that I will be using, just ordered them, and when they got here I realized how much was really on a spool. I don't expect to use all of it, so I thought I should sell some. Therefore, I will not be selling entire spools just now. YinTx

I started on a new project yesterday, so I thought I'd post some progress photos as I went along to keep me moving. If I'm making obvious mistakes along the way, feel free to say something! Positive comments welcome too, as always. Yesterday, I cut the body for the project from purple leather. I'll line it with chocolate suede. Discovered skiving suede makes for weak edges, so I had to make abrupt short skives. Anyone have experience with this or better suggestions? Also started with Chocolate dye on some veg tan pieces. Treating the leather today. YinTx

From the album: Stitching Practice
Ok, file this under yeah, you can, but should you? Just wanted to see the range of a sizeable awl made from very old German steel. Top thread is Cambell Randall brown linen thread, done with a Vergez Blanchard awl, so disregard. Second row is 0.6MM purple Tiger Ritza 25 thread, at 5 stitches per inch, marked with an overstitch wheel. Third row is 1.4MM Yellow Tiger Ritza 25 thread, at 5 stitches per inch, marked with an overstitch wheel. Definitely needs a larger hole! Bottom row is about a 1MM Ashley industries braided machine thread. The awl has a gradual taper, so fairly easy to control hole size. YinTx© YinTx
