  1. From the album: Laptop Bag

To illustrate my frustration on the back of my hand stitching. The vertical row is on the backside of the stitch from gusset panel to front panel. They tend to "wobble" a bit, and I would like to get them more even. I have another photo from today's efforts that shows some improvement. YinTx

Closer up. Still trying to get more even stitches with the linen thread. Also, this is the "battle tested" Tandy leather full of scars, brands, marks, etc. I will need some practice getting the dye more even, it seems the Large size swab doesn't cut it for big pieces of leather. Maybe a sponge next... suggestions? YinTx

  11. Looks like you have a tremendous amount of hours in this one. I've never tooled, so can't be a judge, but I really like the way it came out. YinTx

Only thing left is the edge coating. I have done the first coat, but more to go. Learned a lot on this one. Mainly, that I need more practice!

  15. Made a significant amount of progress yesterday. Still need to finish edging, and made plenty of errors, so pretty much a practice prototype. Stitching on suede I have discovered is difficult, as well as soft chrome tan leather (the pink material). Small stuff, like the stitched chocolate dyed tabs, really highlight inconsistencies. I am wondering, since I used the same thread throughout, and the veg tanned section looks larger than the chrome tanned section, if I should have used different sized threads to try to make it look the same? The topside. I used the same thread on the edging as I did on the chocolate dyed veg tan tab, yet the stitching came out looking like two entirely different sizes of thread. Is it normal to use different sizes in this situation to try to get them to look similar? YinTx

I had a difficult time keeping the back of the stitching straight with the suede. This is the first time I've stitched suede, and only the second time I've used the Barbour linen thread. Both are different to manage than what I am used to. Chalk it up to a practice piece! YinTx

Just put a watch for size reference. The chocolate strap is smaller than a watch strap: maybe I should have used smaller thread? YinTx

Fought with the needle awl and thread some today. Decided to use a linen Barbour thread, a different animal. I think it will come out ok. YinTx

  23. Thank you all kindly. Still working to go neatly around corners, it was difficult on this one, there was a bag stiffener inside. I think I'll avoid using that stuff in the future. YinTx

Robbied, I have been using some nylon webbing! It has worked great, I've been using it for about a month now. It is so much better than the little stitching pony I had. Not the most comfortable thing to sit on for 7 hours at a time, but very functional. YinTx
