Thanks for all the info and help guys. For now I am gonna try out the Henry knife, grabbing the one from Pete. A good deal and Ill get to try out something different. I think Ill save my pennies and after the holidays try and look into getting one from Leather wranglers.

Hey guys, Ive got the tandy standard swivel knife that comes with some of there smaller kits. Im starting to get a little displeased with it, it sweaks and doesnt glide freely when Im doing circles and such. Now the girlfriend wanted to get me one for christmas but not spend a small fortune so Im trying to figure out which one to get. Tandy has the al stohlman brand on sale for around $80 and the AS regular ones for around $45 club price. Ive scene the CS osbourne ones on ebay for pretty cheap but dont know if they are any good or not. THe barry king and similer all seem to go for about $150 or so which is a little high for our price range. What would be your guys's suggestions on what to pick up. Thanks

LOL yes that is my old school light that is used for fitting and such. It is not included. Thanks for the comments everyone. I kind of screwed up a tad on the last one though as the hardware was installed prior to dipping and it tarnished the metal a bit and Im sure got to the rivit as well. Still it will serve its purpose as it is gonna see some seriouse abuse which will be a good test to its stamina. If it brakes or comes apart Ill make em a new one (hopefully not too soon lol)

That is really nice looking, I like it. Kind of makes me think of a really modern version of the old mongel style embelished knife/sword sheaths they use to use, just a far simpler design ornamentally wise. Do you have any pointers for doing the stone inlays?

Very nice job Randy, looks excellent. Question on the dye and finish, what dye did you use and how did you seal it to prevent any rub off and such. Also for the people looking for the punches and such from Tandy, get on the emailing list/mailing list/wholesale club member. Once you have that then wait for sales and check all the resources. Ive rarely if ever paid full price for something from tandy, usually about half price.

I actually used the utility knifes and such, would trace the pattern or line onto the leather then free hand cut the lines. Lastweek I picked up my first roundknife. and I must say WOW these things are nice. It felt really clumsy at first but now that Im getting the hang of it its amazing. Keep it sharp and away from the fingers (yeah I drew blood the first night) and your good to go.

Heres another one I finished tonight. Another gift for someone. Used a belt clip on this one and did a little beveling on the initials. I am just wondering if I did the belt clip correctly. It seems that all thats really holding it in there is the rivit. I guess thats how it is suppose to work right.

Well when airbrushing you will be turning it in to a mist or whatever that gets airborne but your not changing any of the chemical properties of the dye. If it releases benzine then there was benzine in the dye to begin with. However its still not good to breathe the stuff whatever is in there, so atleast a little mask thats good fitting (can get them at homedepot or the such allthough I go to lowes because HD tends to be antigun) and youll be set.

Oh and just to add I could be really off on my description of what I think it is since Im going off only one pic that I saw a while back.

If I can find a picture to post Ill do that. Not sure if there are allready some posted somewhere on the site. Basically from what I know you have a flat piece of glass pointed away from you and drag it toward you over the leather, kind of like dragging a big floor squiggy toward you. This is done after you have cased or wetted your leather and it is suppose to really smooth out the grain side or something. HarryB, thanks for the input. Now Im gonna have to try it, Im not sure about seperating the grain/flesh but Im sure Ill realize pretty quick what exactly you mean LOL.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like that would hold up for some time. I try to absorb all this info so if and when I ever get around to trying out my own bag or purse in a similer style Ill have some starting points. Ive got a purse cut out from vegtan just gotta get started on it but I would like to make a laptop case for a friend and would probably go with latigo. However I think that one will wait till I get a sewing machine

OK so I read I think it is one of the books that I have or maybe here also that some people recommend that after casing your piece to take a piece of glass and pull toward you over the leather to smooth it out. I guess this is suppose to even out the grains on top or something. Anyways would this smooth out the top so that the portions that arent carved get a smoother look? How many of you guys use this technique and if so how did it compare to not doing it? I dont have any glass that is readily available to try but would get some if this tends to be a good method. Thanks

Question for ya, you say it has a spring loaded holder, is that like a Cclip type thing that you push them into, any concerns with wear on the arrows.
