Help Identifying Possibly Antique Leather Object
fredk replied to DoorMaker's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Old style fish filleting knives are long and thin, about 6 inches long blade and 3/4 to 1 inch at the widest and with a pronounced curve This sort of shape, which would fit in your carrier easily They blunt fairly speedily when gutting a lot of fish so if you have a boat load to do you'd want a few sharpened knives handy -
Help Identifying Possibly Antique Leather Object

I can't think of or suggestion anything else so I'd support the idea of a knife sheath. For a working person who needs a number of knives handy, like a fish preparer, beheading and gutting fish. Those rivets remind me of European Spanish or Portuguese; they like to use a lot of those rivets, on leather and woodwork -
Thanks for the ideas. I'd like to avoid use of plastic or cardboard tubes

I've actually used (new clean) ones for that. Not really hotdogs, but barbied sausages. -
I'm still making a quiver for #1 favourite dottir. On our irregular recent phone conversation she just happened to mention that her present quiver had partitions to make 3 sections for her arrows. She says she likes this and would like it in her new quiver Any suggestions on how to make 3 or even 4 sections? I'm using a special piece of embossed leather and was going to do just a basic folded over bag type. I have this leather cut to size and shape but now opened up. Other than the join of the two edges to close it and at its mouth I cant sew anywhere else. I was thinking; two sort of tubes of leather sewn to one larger piece to enclose them, then this larger piece glued to the inside of the special leather and then just sewn at the mouth of the quiver, with maybe some sort of re-enforcement around the opening overlapping the inner and outer leather Any other ideas or suggestions?

oh, thanks, I didn't know it was a double flap in that manner I've noticed that the retaining strap can be of two ways; stud low and strap down to it, or stud high and the strap goes up to it

Thanks, it all helps

Thanks chaps Due to UK laws I can't have the pistol at home so I think I'll draw around it, the way AS shows in his making holsters book, and photo it. Maybe make a wood copy in shape as you suggest I've seen the photos on t'ineret. I'll print some of them off. The client insists that the holster has to have the German eagle and swastika on it but I've not seen a photo of an original with that on

I have several types of blade sharpeners. On dies I mostly use a small slip stone and for small places that can't reach I use a telescopic fish hook sharpener

They are becoming hard to get I just remembered I got one of mine free. I bought it from China via ebay. I ordered the one with round profiles and they sent a square profiled one. I complained through ebay and the seller apologised, told me to keep the wrong one and they sent me the correct one. I tried to pay for the wrong one but ebay isn't set up to do that. I didn't want to take advantage of the seller. Found these on ebay. a reasonable price. You can use these in a mini-motor tool as well https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/364008622688?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20201210111314%26meid%3Dfad5ee17d88a4ad181cff908186f64e3%26pid%3D101195%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D385165560986%26itm%3D364008622688%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D3458402%26algv%3DSimplAMLv11WebTrimmedV3MskuWithLambda85KnnRecallV1V2V4ItemNrtInQueryAndCassiniVisualRankerAndBertRecallWithVMEV3%26brand%3DUnbranded&_trksid=p3458402.c101195.m1851&amdata=cksum%3A364008622688fad5ee17d88a4ad181cff908186f64e3|enc%3AAQAIAAABUPqB0EgCndAssfMWNy0AT0GytGzF9%2By0G%2BlcW69DgBK3Qlz4BjwJQqPkN4K8I7qz9GoVciN1QNWqyS8EeqYS8rZRsDvyvw34m3N%2FyJKokwCTIIc3RNym2SNW8ARudP72DyiwgIY0dfUnIr5%2BMZDTaovm%2F9i6HbqogXHgrRtlBOXJBpTaj6VaBdDGueRiM2kTHzxVZaNY4y9kDOJFMEzaakQx%2F4NYu00LohEwG8x9DCOSYMhS%2FBQrbdnB6WWKKU1tfGkQW7bnrhnZ5hb0JQ34JDg1V91Cmh8qr1TGWwphIOclAnOdqvKdlYxe6unAQ8BeCUaEimvhqgrmtaM%2BmgXL5in5TYj58%2F7uLCGik9Ckbim5JtD0%2BuJ9hhuvSwgPwjOeSg0GYE8j82MG1o1pTbwbM6uqSkP4OXTLl6GzgCb4eKApLrXBP1rDpe7P6Ynzux5OGA%3D%3D|ampid%3APL_CLK|clp%3A3458402 -
Would the US post be so prohibitivly expensive? One 3D resin stamp would weigh about 5g, 1/5 ounce. A small standard postal box (does US post still do those?) about $3? The postage and box for my & was about, I estimate, £3

@Gezzer btw, your piece is very nicely done, and inventive We are all just thinking of alternatives and not dissing your creation -
Okee-doakly Try making contact with someone with a 3D printer. Just a couple of weeks ago I got some 3D printed ampersands (the & sign) made in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 inch sizes and the chappie sent me several copies of each. He charged me £20 for everything, having to draw it up, print them and post them to me

I'm thinking they might be cordwainers tools or book-binders tools

Instead of a snap/popper what about a piece of elastic, in a closed circle? Like a scrunchie? maybe a couple of them, one top and one at middle, or maybe not -
Now there's a phrase based in leather work; in early times shoes did not have heels. Men got heels on their riding boots, to keep their feet in the stirrups. A rider only needed a low heel riding a slow nag but for riding the more expensive and livelier hunters the rider needed a deeper heel. Thus a rich man, who could afford a good hunter was 'well heeled' now you know I'm full of interesting (read useless) information like that

No, that is not mine, but I have one like it and another of different profile, more square-ish. They are, or were, fairly cheap to buy. Altho I've not used mine for a while since my last soldering iron died With these you don't need any pressure, just a light swipe along the edge A pyrogravure is just a glorified soldering iron. Most good ones have some sort of temperature settings Main point is tho, keep the heat localised to protect your hands. Too much dry heat can dry out your fingers and hands, You'll need to put hand cream on after each session to prevent dry cracks forming on your skin, which can be very painful Something for only those who know what they're doing; when I was a bee keeper I put a resistor into the mains supply feed line of a 40w soldering iron to make it reduce its heat so it would just about melt bees' wax
