  1. huh. I'm going through all this trouble and learning new techniques to make grandpa an xl wallet(by american standards) so he can fit his prescriptions in it and all I had to do was buy him a UK wallet? This looks really nice mattsbagger!
  2. I thought this thread was going to be about burnishing. I would love to receive more critiquing but can understand why it might not be worth it to the more experienced people to speak up. Also wish it was easier to talk about tradition and change in leather craft. Like the difference in things that havn't changed over time because they are good engineering/technique/supply and what hasn't changed because new tech hasn't been applied to it yet. But man do I see where that discussion could be more of a headache than help anyone.
  3. Hah that's exactly what I did for honing rod, grommet and all. Very consistent looking from piece to piece!
  4. Edge flex is actually good? Could a soldering iron work? I could have been having nice edges all this time?
  5. I hope to try giardini in the future, but for now I need something that will work for some pigskin and chrome tan edges. And I'm stuck with this very large bottle of edge flex. So no heat needed for it? (which is good cause I don't have any heating elements)
  6. Just want to be sure I got this. I have a bottle of tandy edge flex but no instruction. -apply edge flex -heat -sand? -Repeat
  7. That is my current hurdle as well. I'm going to attempt some pigskin skiving tonight without any proper skiving blades!
  8. Thanks guys, that makes sense. Honestly my stuff isn't polished enough to pay for pristine and scar less. It makes the "rugged crudeness" look more on purpose? But if these are SLC grading terms it makes it easier than trusting different tanneries versions of what is an A and what is a B grade. I just would need to plan ahead for the large cutouts I will need to make and make there is no holes interfering with the dimensions? Wasn't ready for a purchase just yet so i didn't want to bother the SLC people until then. Thanks for helping.
  9. Another nice one! What was your process like for the edges of the pigskin?
  10. Yeah that looks good. I exaggerated the design in the original too much
  11. Yeah a lot of leather tools are sharp. What age group are we talking? Most kids won’t hurt themselves but it would be very hard to keep a large group from wrecking the tools. looking for patterns for the kids to follow or for the instructors to pre cut and prep?
  12. Anyone know what the difference is between http://www.springfieldleather.com/Side-Tooling-Medium-3-4oz and http://www.springfieldleather.com/Side-Tooling-Top-3-4-oz I don't really need veg tan for tooling at the moment so I thought I should try something cheaper. Thanks, Mike
  13. Welcome. Very nice edges and stitches!
  14. Hmmm lets go with height 9 inches length 10 inches width total 4 inches (two pouches at 2 inches each) hopefully not not too big to bump into everything but could still fit a small book 1st pic-outer edges I’m familiar with for veg tan. (I have a bottle of Tandy edge flex but have never got an edge I like out of it) 2nd pic-covered accordion is something I do want to learn, I think I’ll need it eventually. I have done a little super skiving on veg tan. 3rd pic- ! What are those called? I have seen those and want to learn but have never tried. thanks rocky, you have been all kinds of help. SJ, thanks but I don’t think I have any leather thin enough yet that needs stiffener. Unless you mean for the floor of the bag? Tandy’s is a paper product right? Wouldn’t that get too crumpled over time for a bottom plate?

    Strop it!

Is this roll easily visible once you've stopped too hard or something you have to learn by touch?
  16. Very nice. This is another thing I need to learn and am sure I’d be horrible at.
  17. Haha thanks! I'll start going through that pinterest link in a bit. That pic you added at the bottom is very interesting. Not sure how that would open and function while hanging from a cross body strap. -cylinder arm? I'm thinking a soft pliable 3-4 oz for the inner pouches and thicker veg tan like you mentioned or maybe start experimenting with bridle? Yeah all hand tools here, and not many of them yet.
  18. Dun

    Strop it!

can you go further into what that means? Thanks!
  19. accordian! that's probably the word I was looking for! Ill check it out Fredk. That stuff sounds good to also make some dummy cards for wallet making too.
  20. I'll have to see what I can find that isn't too heavy. I'm already worried about how heavy this will already be
  21. Good to know thanks. And here is the only markings on it if that can help ID it
  22. Thanks. I'll try and take a pic of the logo brand thingy. I really like the stuff now and would like to know what it is to get more
  23. I had been staying away from oily leathers cause I thought they didn't like hand burnishing?
  24. Wow that is pretty. Agree with yin, I can't process how to do a basket weave like that
  25. My uncle had some scrap leather and mystery tools. The tools looked like an edge beveler at first but I think are actually burnishers. Some of the leather I assumed was chrome tanned and when folded it and did a test stitch it had a bit of pull up oil displacement. And then it burnished really well so I have no idea what it actually is. Behind the mystery leather is a piece of glazed pigskin and some regular veg tan scrap. There is a major difference when the pigskin is on the outside of the combo, it doesn't burnish much at all
