Invisible stitch from both sides of leather
Dun replied to WastelandOuterwear's topic in Sewing Leather
I think I have seen this before, just not applied to leather. Is it this stitch? -
I keep wondering if I could just use an 8-10 oz piece for the key retaining bit thing

Anyone know what to even call the little tab that holds the keys on the elastic cord? let alone where they might be purchased? Thanks everyone

So I found out today that someone who I've made a couple leather items for, is going to be buried with them. Only a couple of years of casual leather work but I managed to make somethings useful enough to become that engrained. It kinda helps in saying goodbye knowing you were a part of their daily life.

Mutt, how do you think this wallet style would function if you put 1 fold in the dollar bill before inserting it and chopped off the 1/3rd on the right? I really like the design, but I can't stop thinking about minimizing the amount of leather used. I think I'm going to try an open sided next. I was trying to have a certain amount of slots and the wallet still be short enough my fingers/thumnb could squeeze the middle open. I think what I need to do is commit to shortening it by a slot or lengthening so the existing amount of slots lay flatter(and open the end like yours).

Am I missing something or are the thicknesses not listed?

Tried to go for a slimmed down front pocket wallet. Mentally turned a bifold wallet inside out for the design, sewing it shut in the middle to form a bill slot. Does that have a name already? Feel free to critique and offer suggestions. Couldn't see my prick marks in the black so the awl holes are all kinds of wonky. It's only made out pigskin lining leather since it was a test piece. The card windows work well for getting the front card out while still sitting.

well done. that is just terrifying to me to consider ruining that big of a piece of leather

Is my watch strap supposed to look this worn?
Dun replied to doingmahresearch's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Full grain leather doesn't mean it wasn't coated/surface correction. Glued leather layers can crinkle when bent or as stated, the buckle can wear on it. although nothing there specifically looks veg tanned, the good news is that it doesn't look cracked. The wear and tear isn't anything structural to worry about quality. It just isn't going to stay formal attire kind of smooth, -
also interested in your system for these too. This does look like an amazing use of scraps. Love the process pics so far!

Damn the stretchy leather really gets complex. And the perfection of your pattern for all those folded edges lining up is very impressive! I'd love to see the whole process but not at the expense of your deadlines or patience

What is this edge type called again? And any tips on how to practice it?

I think I have seen boat shoe stitching videos that did a saddle stitch before. Do you already have a pattern to go by?

Really well done

Grandpa wanted an extra large bifold that can hold all his stuff, including prescriptions. It's huge. Way bigger than anything I would have accepted to work on, except this was grandpa asking. He also requested a pull tab for his most used card. No finger prints left after a life time of farm work so he has trouble with most regular card slots. so: 3 regular card slots. 2 extra large card slots. 1 pull tab slot. 2 large wing pockets. 1 very large bill slot. Used this project to try french binding, skiving and multiple layers of edge painting; all for the first time. I'm probably only happy with 70% of the stitches. I really need to get better with awl use. Outside is a 4/5 oz veg tan(grandpa wanted durable but really I should have gone thinner), dark brown is a mystery veg tan my uncle gave me that burnishes surprisingly well, and the black is glazed pig skin from tandy(soooo also mystery). Poly thread. Tandy edge flex and sanding and edge flex and sanding and edge and sanding and polishing, etc etc. I did them so many times and still never got the results I wanted. Layers upon layers. Oh well, should be durable. That's 12 layers of leather when not counting the t-slots and folded over edges. Really I think grandpa needs a zippered wallet or something. Or maybe 2 slim wallets. One for medical info and another money and phone numbers he can't remember. Critique away. I need to start cutting up the pigskin into a million card slots I guess. Not sure what else I'd want to use it on.

Chrome tan, Veg tan, Other tan....Help me understand

Thank so much paul. I was about to start researching if any ingredients of hair skin products might be similar to the oil conditioners we use -
Chrome tan, Veg tan, Other tan....Help me understand
Dun replied to Rossr's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Agreed, for myself. Still not sure how to make sure others worry about moisture and oiling and still want a particular product though. (Probably a separate thread but Small baby cousin isn't so small anymore and finishing hair stylist school soon. Would love to make a scissor holder that would last a lifetime, but I can practically see their eyes glaze over with the leather care instructions) -
Will it need to bend? Havn't tried yet but I have read that multiple light coats need to be applied, bending slightly and making tiny cracks in the paint. Each new layer fills and blends the thousands of tiny cracks so they aren't visible as a single big crack in the paint job.
