My Latest Notebook
BearMan replied to BearMan's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Hi Everbody,,, Thanks for all the wonderful comments! Yes the creases in the spine helps keep things straight. The coloring took about 6-8 hours. The inside flaps don't really translate in the pictures very well,,, they actually look like a wood Burl. The edges were done using one of Beary's Dremel style Burnishers, followed by some hand work with Paraffin wax. Thanks for looking -

Hi Everybody, Here is the latest creation off my bench. It's a Anniversary present for somebody my wife works with. I don't know what the flowers are,,, I think some kind of WildFlowers. She supplied the pictures that she took of the flowers she wanted on it. Sooo,,, this is what I came up with. As always,, the coloring took about as long,,, maybe longer than the tooling. Thanks for looking!! Ed the"BearMan" P.S. Two Bible Covers will be the next things,,,

Hi Everybody, Here are some of the BearMauls that have been keeping us busy the past couple months. Beary made the Pink Ivory & Holly pair. The Pink Ivory, was extramly hard, almost as hard as Ironwood! The Bocote, has a very interesting grain pattern. All of you that have been keeping up with the BearMauls, will notice that the darker brown is back!! It took some time to get back, but it really looks good with most of the woods we use. Of course, we can still do the "Russet" med brown, & the Black as well. On another note, we will be moved into our dedicated shop in a few weeks, which will make it a lot better for my back pain situation,,, plus our turn around time should be even better then. We've been having to work on Beary's porch,,, having to set up,,, & tear down the tools, everytime we worked on anything. Plus the porch is somewhat exposed to the weather. Happy days are comming soon!! Thanks for looking!! Ed the"BearMan" & Beary(kodiak50004@aol.com)

Hi Chris, I feel your pain. On a whole, I've found "True" Leather people to be very honest & trustworthy, with high morals. This just proves that this person is not a true leather person! I just won't do anything like that. I've had several people ask me about making the same type of burnishers that you make,,, I always turn them down, & refer them to you. Before I started making my "BBS" (Bob Beard Special) mauls, I asked Bob Beard if he would give me permission to put that design out there. Luckily, he gave me his permission, & send me customers quite often. By making inferior copies of your work, just shows that this is not an honorable person. Luckily most of us true leather people are honorable enough to know that doing something like that is just Wrong!! Good Luck,,, Ed the"BearMan"

Hi, That's an old Cabbage chopper. It was used to chop all kinds of veggie. If you notive the stem between the blade & the handle is very slim, & just wouldn't be strong enough to be used on leather,,, plus the geometry wouldn't work very well. But,,, on a good note, you could probably sell it on ebay, for enough to buy a nice head knife. Ed

How To Thin Out Dye
BearMan replied to jmann8686's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
After many years using alcohol based dyes, some observations. While Isopropyl Alcohol will work to thin / de lute the dye, the result is a bit "grainy" in comparison, to using Denatured Alcohol. When using Denatured Alcohol, the color looks "smoother", especially when you get down to very eluted mixtures. Some of my colors get down to almost 1000/1. Basically in a 3 oz bottle, alcohol almost to the top, with 10 drops of color. We're only talking about a very minor difference,,, but the difference is noticeable. A 50/50 mixture for me is a Very strong color. Denatured alcohol, is about $6.00 for a quart,,, & that should last you a long time. I still use Isopropal Alcohol, for cleaning everything. I hope this helps,,, Ed the"BearMan -
Thanks Aaron & Kevin!! 99.9% are made especially for an order. Every once in a while we will make something extra, or just different. In the past, I would try to make enough extra, to take to the Extreme Leather Workshop, in Asheville Nc. But since we've moved back down to Florida, I just don't think we'll be able to make it this year It looks like we're going to be able to offer the darker brown head stock again pretty soon. Thanks for looking,,, Ed the"BearMan" & Beary

Hi Everybody, Here are some of the recent Mauls we've made. Some were Christmas presents, & some were personal presents. Several of these were made by Beary (kodiak50004@aol.com) I'm really proud of the work that Beary is doing on his Mauls! Hopefully we will have a real shop set up, in a couple months. That will make it a lot better,,, not having to set things up,,, just to have to tear things down each time we work on anything. Our shop is in a constant state of confusion!! hehehe Thanks for looking,,, Ed the"BearMan" & Beary

Hi,,, Thanks Everybody!!, cowdog,, PM sent resqman,,, a bench weight is used to help hold a piece of leather in place while you're tooling it. Just makes it easier. Marc,,, sure, when ever you're down this way, just let me know. I'd be glad to show you my drastically shrunken leather shop,,, compared to what I'd like. It's all of 20" deep, by almost 4 feet long!! hehehe Thanks again,, Ed the"BearMan"

Hi Everybody, After all the Christmas presents got finished,,, I saw the need for a little "present" for myself. It weighs about 3 pounds, & is made out of some 5-6oz leather from Zack White. It's about 4" x 6". My old one isn't quite that heavy. I put on a good coat of oil, both inside & some Satin Professional Top Coat finish from Zelikovitz, in Canada. I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with the finish. I wouldn't say water "proof",,, but a drop of water sitting on it for about 15 min. just wiped right off, with no water stain. Plus, it seems to help bring out the colors also. Thanks for looking,,, please let me know what You think,,, Ed the"BearMan"

Hi everybody, Thanks for all the wonderful comments! Ben,,, Hmmm,,, well maybe,,, I'm not doing anything between midnite & 4 am,,, hehehe I didn't really keep track of the time, but,,, I probably have about 20-30 hours in it. A lot of back & forth,, grinding the plates,,, test fitting,,, grinding some more, & so on. Thanks for looking,,, Ed the"BearMan"

Hi Everybody, Thanks for all the wonderful comments!! Ben is right, this type of bench mat is more for displaying the finished Gun,, or knife. As far as using it,,, I feel that the true character of most any leather piece, doesn't really shine, until it gets some "patina" from use. I guess that's why I like tooling leather that has lots of range marks, & "fat" marks. Thanks for looking! Ed the"BearMan"
