  1. Do you want a blog or a forum, though? They're very different.
  2. I had no problems in Firefox or IE. Haven't explored the whole site yet, but what I've seen so far looks good!
  3. That's how I used to wear my boonie hat in Kuwait, and the winds got pretty stiff out there. We had an NCO who couldn't read the uniform regs for content, and just looked at the pretty pictures, which showed the string under the chin, so she insisted that that was how the "bonnet" was supposed to be worn. I blew her off, as I wasn't interested in chasing my hat around the motorpool -- and she was wrong, anyway.
  4. I got a 404 error for those two links, as well. You might want to rethink having blue hyperlinks on a grey background; they sort of make my eyes go all buggy. Try a darker blue, maybe. Other than that, I really appreciate the write-ups in all the gallery photos! It makes the whole thing seem really friendly.
  5. I use craft acrylics all the time, and Super Shene and Fiebing's Leather Sheen both work well.
  6. Right, and you can cut the bottom and sides all as one piece. Folding over the top of the side may be problematic, but I bet if you wet it and clamp it gently it'll work well. Play with the posterboard, though. If you score it lightly with a utility knife, it'll bend nicely.
  7. That's what the patterning is for, and why I recommended you cut it a little larger. If you cut the side tabs too long, you can always trim them down. I suggested going bottom up because otherwise you have several long seams to sew, and the possibility of doing a lot of patchwork on the bottom. If you go bottom up, you only have to sew two short seams on the front corners, and then one long seam on the back where you attach the tab from the cover.
  8. If it were me, I'd play around with patterning using posterboard or heavy paper, but when you cut the leather, depending on the weight, allow a little extra to accomodate the thickness. I would actually start at the bottom and bring the side pieces up and over the top, which may be what you meant in the first place and I'm misreading you. There may be an issue with the box closing due to the added thickness. What might work is detaching the lid, using it as a stiffener, and the leather tab on the back will act as the hinge. Hope that helps -- can't wait to see it!
  9. Vegemite, Promite, Bovril... don't you people know that the proper toast spread is peanut butter? Or on English muffins, the best comfort food EVER is butter, peanut butter, and Nutella. Om nom NOM.

This is steampunk: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk "Mad Max" and "Waterworld" are both dystopian future history, not steampunk. ;-)
  12. That's really wonderful! Thanks for sharing!
  13. I'm making this padfolio for a friend and customer in the SCA. The design is her coat of arms. Digital mockup of the design: Carved design: Tooled dragon: Dragon closeup: Partially painted: The lower part of the shield and the background will be black, as well as the claws, tongue, teeth and horn. The eye will be black with a white sclera. (I suggested other colors, but she wants what she wants.) The whole thing will be stitched together with red cord. I used artist's acrylic to do the painting, in titanium white and alizarin crimson. I'm really happy with the results, but I need stiffer brushes to push the paint around. It has a fairly heavy body and soft brushes don't work well to cover larger areas. I just need to fix the light in my kitchen and I'll be able to finish it.
  14. Well, that's the state, and we have 50 of them, most with decently long names. And yet people still get confused by the postal abbreviations, and use MI for Mississippi when it actually stands for Michigan (Mississippi is MS), or MA for Maine (ME), which actually stands for Massachusetts... etc etc etc ad nauseam. Google ought to help you locate places on the map; this is Lawrence, MA, where I live. Or you could start a Frappr map for LW.
  15. Did you use interfacing, or one of those iron-on patch things? Fusible interfacing comes in different weights; you might want to find one that's lighter, so it'll bend easier.
  16. Exactos are thinner than snap-off razor blades from the hardware store, which is what I was responding to.
  17. This is true, but the Exactos have a variety of blade shapes, and the blades are thinner. They may be superior for some application.
  18. What kind of knife are you using?
  19. How can someone get second place (or third?) when there is no first place?
