Ann, It could be a couple of things. What size needle are you using? If the needle is small, it could be that the needle is being pushed into the hook so that there is no loop for the hook to pick up. I would try and turn the machine slowly by hand to see what the needle and hook are doing. Watch to see if the needle is being deflected by the hook. Too much tension on the top thread will also warp the needle so that the hook will not pick up the top thread. That may be the clicking sound you are hearing. Are you using a sytem 332 needle, same size as the 29x3, 4 or longer needle 332lg which is the same needle as the 30-7? I will have to check to see which needle system your machine is supposed to use. glenn

[ Rickybobby. I believe what you have is a Claes Model 30 large bobbin shoe patcher. Pilgrim Shoe brought them in the US under the name Tuffy starting in the 1970's. If so, it uses a needle system #88. You can also use the same needle as in an Adler 30-70 high lift shoe patcher. That system is #332lg or #332llg for leather. The only difference is the Adler needle has a little large shank on it. It may fit in your needle hole or not. Depends on how much wear is in the needle hole. I have enlarged them to accommodate these needles but you must be very careful not to make the hole too large. You only need to enlarge it about 2-3 thousands. Gateway Shoe carries the needles as doe Pilgrim Shoe. I also have a few depending on the size you are looking for. Joyshop, I have searched for and finally found a parts manual for the 545 pfaff. It shows the complete illustration for the knee lift assembly on page 96. I can fax it to you so you can determine which parts you are missing since this shows all the pfaff part numbers. It took me some time to find it and I hope it will help you. The parts manual is 117 pages long!!! glenn miller

JoysShop, I have a Pfaff 1245 which replaced the 545. I believe pfaff upgraded the knee lift for the type you have just like Adler did on their 267-373. I do not have a parts list for the 545 but I know someone does. That said, you could then find out what parts you need for the foot lift. I will check and see if I can get you a parts breakdown on that set up. glenn miller

Gavingear, The Pfaff 545 and 1245 will sew a maximum thread size of #207. Will not sew #277 unless a lot of machineing is done on the hook and bobbin area. Let me know what parts you are missing . I can put so on to a place that has some generic pfaff parts. shoepatcher

China, To me, it looks like an old Singer 45K that was repainted from black to Silver and they painted over the Singer logo's and removed the Singer brass model number and or the brass Si nger plate. This happened to a lot of Singers when they were rebuilt and repainted. machine looks in goods shape. Let me see a close up of the needle and throat plate and we may be able to indentify the model number to determine what 45 K it is. shoepatcher

The Adler 30-7 is from their older class of shoe patchers. It is long arm, big bobbin, hi lift shoe patcher. It uses a longer system of needle than the 30-1. That system is 332lg Some parts are still available for the machine but Adler quit making alot of the parts for the machine after they came out with the new versions-30-10, 30-50 and the 30-70 which replaced the 30-7. I have a lot of parts for those earlier machines that are no longer available including early manuals and parts list. Let me know if i can help you.

Art, this is a Singer UFA which stood for Universal Feed Arm, the original name for the shoe patcher. Singer began building these machines in 1883. In 1896, the changed the name of the machine to a 29 class as they did with most machines. They went from names to numbers for the machines and subclasses. Your's is a UFA and it uses the same bobbins , needles and hook as any 29 class. Yours even has the old style bobbin winder. Hope that helps.
