I am sorry you have had so much annoyance with this guy, I haven't been there before, but I feel like I have with other people using my ideas and claiming themn as there own. I did soon part ways, and at one point that wasn't such a good idea as I was regarded as a cold hearted SOB. But that fact is, you can't walk through life always being nice no matter how hard you try. So my advice is make the hard decession now, blurt out all your feelings with a large bat or other suitable prop. And be happy with yourself knowing your doing the best thing for YOU. and YOUR wellbeing. And if you are aiming to make money from your talents, then you have another reason to tell him to walk.

I was finishing off five notebooks today for gifting, all of which took up the offer of free name carving... Probably, that would be a big mistake if customers knew the proper defination of carving. I am not capable of carving with a swivel knife no matter how hard I try, as soon as there is a curve I screw it up, so for only one of these books I used it. On the others I used my old standard method. A blunted awl. These are the results I am getting...I know the pic is a bit big, sorry about that. Now it's far from perfect, and I was working on top of a scratch too, that wasn't the result of me slipping (this time anyway) So, my point is I think the results I am getting by drawing like a pen are pretty good, critique away. But with a more suitable knife I think I could do some pretty decent carving...(maybe) Hopefully even... Any suggestions.

Has no one seriously tried to make a hat before?

My first attempt at a belt

I think buying a punch just for this might be over kill, just punch two sound holes that don't touch or do and chisel or knife the line between them. -
I had replied to this from my phone two days ago but it obviously didn't go through. I basically just say have fun with it. Practice by taking just little bits off your lace at a time. working at different speeds and holding methods till you get used to it. And as you know you can do without the beveler and still get good results, so you can send that my way, I won't hold it against you. lol

If anyone can help. I used to have a barmagh roo sundowner and loved it, until it got stolen from me. Now with all the rain beating this country down I am getting really sick of it and would like another hat similar in design. I don't mind hand stitching, but hope to be able to use edge braiding. Recommendations on leather type to use would also help, I know the roo stuff was pretty flimsy but the shape held well when folded a lot, is this principly a design benefit or a leather thing. Chrome, or veg... An actual pattern I can print off would be ideal here. Thank you kindly

I like the work. -
I tried your calculator, Maybe it's firefox but it doesn't seem to be working...

It's always possible to make a jig for doing this too, but it's a lot of work and not worth it unless your doing it a lot...

Actually it's just the experience with the lace itself, With the red stuff at least I had a lot of it so a metre cut in each width, preped and tested was good enough for me... The stuff I will be using in the future is what I wanted this measurement for, as I know there is very little shrinkage in it.

Don't forget HUMAN skin. Some very old human skin bound books are still around and in very good condition.

I posted this in leather conversation for some wierd reason before. But here it is again. I would like to know if anyone has cut using a lace maker 4-5mm lace from a full 3 foot circle. I used to have a list of circle sizes I get from lace making, but that was mainly using smaller circles anyway. Anyway... A 2 foot circle cut from the middle yielding a 4mm lace gave me 79 metres (259') of lace...after stretching, I actually gained nearly 10 metres from stretch alone. But it wasn't even a bad hide really, the width barely changed if it did at all.

Inspiration, Copying, Giving Credit?
8thsinner replied to JohnBarton's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I do know how you feel on this topic. A few weeks ago I saw one of my designs made by someone else who is on this forum. It was a practical utility design which I have been using and carrying for years. Now to see someone else making it, And I freely admit his version is nicer and uses better leather is kinda cool it also makes me paranoid that all my stuff is going to get stolen. And some of my designs I do spend like yourself a long long time on, weeks sometimes. So that annoys me a little. But I can also believe that someone else also came up with this design on their own, and have another person make it. I have no proof that his was done before mine, and when I realise that I have to simply say kudos to the man. It's my idea but if people like it then they like it. Good for me, a little better for the person who made it for someone else and better for everyone who can share in the delight of using it. -
Leather Bracelets Mixed Exotics

OMG I am so in love with that (what I call same) Sting ray. It's colours are fantastic. Absolutely beautiful. So I am going to ask you, 1) is it still available and for how much? 2) can you share your source for rayskin, 3) Do you have other colours and or other scraps I could maybe work with myself? I would love to use that on my katana. And have a mtaching bracelet. geeky and girly but still...lol The rest of them all look very very good too. -
Sorry about the wierd double post, I was typing that out on the phone.. Anyway. I know how you feel, I would love the idea of taking things apart that I messed up but I grew out of it for one reason, Everything I do I can see the faults in, Nothing I have done is in my mind anywhere near perfect yet. I reckon it never will be, I am extremely critical of my work. And any thing that doesn't cut the biscuit it's good to have around to remind you of the mistakes made. As other people have noted too, it's not as easy for non leather workers to see the faults in anything. Most toolers probably wouldn't know what a twist under a pineapple would look like, or where a lace snapped and such. But the way I look at it is, I will never stop learning if I am this critical and always seeking the perfect piece. But if I ever reach it thats not something I will ever sell. But first I have to work my way through the 105 completely unrelated leather braided projects I have listed. I love it that much, I would braid my tooth brush, Infact I might just do that one of these days...
