New to the Forums - Eager to learn
Riem replied to RedNose's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Welcome to the forum - nice stuff you have there! Do you use a double stitch line on all your sheaths and axe covers? Looks very good! -
pancake sheath Pancake sheath for my pocket knife
Riem replied to Riem's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Apologies friends - I missed a couple of the later comments and feedback. @Vikefan thanks for the compliments. Really appreciate it! @Goblin210 Thanks for the comment! I didn't use punches at all, only an overstitch wheel and a diamond awl. It is meant to be worn on a 38 mm wide belt. @toxo Thank you very much! @chrisash Thanks for the tip - will do so if I make another of these. Not sure if the wife will consent, but hey, live and learn! :-) -
Short of adding another layer of leather on the "outside", I don't think there's another way to hide the stitching. You can perhaps make a sleeve similar to a slip in sheath for spectacles - that will also secure the sd cards better (looks like you didn't use any form of snap or other closure on the case).

Two hours per tool? What a great investment! You developed a great skill and got two fine looking pieces to show for it. I really like it.

Excellent burnishing there. And "wonky" stitching on the back is so normal it's part of the tradition... @YinTx here on the board calls them spirit stitches and I think it shows your stitching muse is visiting. :-)
-
Welcome to the addic... forum. :-) And your sheath compliments the knife very well - bevelled edges (burnishing go well?), straight stitching (looks if you figured that out - what does the back looks like?) nice colouring. That's a really beautiful knife too!

Hi Eben, kinda hard to think of you as a supplier if you don't state where in SA you are located - the country is about 1.2 million square km so it may be difficult finding you... Also, perhaps the Marketplace would be a more suitable option for an announcement like this (or is it an advert?)

Welcome to the forum! Great idea that tool pouch... Hmmm, quite a bit of sewing there - I presume it's machine sewn and not hand stitched?

I think what @chrisash is referring to is treating the plaque as an inlay - sort of what this old post shows:

Welcome to the forum - it's like a university here, "when the student is ready, the teacher will emerge" - here's to a smooth slide into the addic... craft! And Godspeed with Hurricane D - never had that experience, but I believe it is awful to live through.

Ouch - may there somehow be a great rebirth for the the business in the future.

Latest Bowie and Sheath
Riem replied to dougfergy's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Very, very nice! And despite the slight unevenness of the stitching on the back, it is a great cover for a fearsome knife... Holy smoke - what a blade that is! Best to keep it sheathed and at ease in such a nice yard of cow... -
Tooling after stitching on layered belt.
Riem replied to ultimatemcnab's topic in Floral and Sheridan Carving
Hi @ultimatemcnab There are some unknowns here that will make it difficult to give a straight answer, such as the thickness of the two layers, whether the leather is still raw (ie, is it dyed or coated or raw), the type of leather, etc. A picture of the belt might help. Personally I've not done much tooling, but with my limited knowledge of it I'd say it will be difficult to achieve a great outcome, since the bottom layer of leather is likely to absorb the impact and soften the effect of things like bevelers and backgrounders. That said, unless anyone else has experience with this, and if you are willing to experiment, why not try - you may just break new ground. If you do, please let us know how it turns out! -
Lovely sheath overall! Tooling is as perfect as I could wish to do at this time, and the stitching is absolutely fine. If this is the 5 mm per stitch then I think it is right on the money. Love how it came together.

Is this wrinkling normal for a dual layer belt?
Riem replied to patrick2099's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
@JLSleather I just need to say your distinction between "normal-common" and "normal-inevitable" is precious! Now that's what I call discernment - the knowledgetto know the difference and then true skill of being able to pick the fly specks from the pepper... And I mean it as a compliment! -
I really like the idea of a themed gift set! Very nice work all the items, especially on the cover.

The inspiration must have set a high bar, and it seems you have risen to the challenge! Excellent execution - great looking bag. Could you share the dimensions please? -
My new bag
Riem replied to bikermutt07's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks for the detailed reply. I can see through possibility of the waste that you mention - makes working with a bought pattern less appealing, but there's truth too in what @blue duck said about overcutting providing some wiggle room. Hmmm, good insights. -
My new bag
Riem replied to bikermutt07's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
@bikermutt07 this is a super bag for carrying a laptop around in! I really like how all the elements come together. Although I would have burnished, I completely agree with @YinTx that it's the maker's decision, and in this bag the unburnished edges adds to the overall look. What was the most challenging part of the build? -
Welcome Mathilde, all the way from South Africa! Hope to see some of your work on here.

pancake sheath Pancake sheath for my pocket knife
Riem replied to Riem's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
So in the above Afrikaans language exchange between Wreford and I he asked if I wet formed the sheath and if it retains the pocket knife well? In my reply I explained that I first completed the construction and dye before I lightly sprayed the inside of the sheath, wrapped the knife in cling wrap plastic, stuck it into the sheath and allowed it to dry overnight. I added that the knife fits snugly - not so that it's difficult to draw, especially when I'm "confronted" with a piece of biltong that needs carving up for a snack... -
Tie down weekender bag a backpack
Riem replied to Marietje's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
This looks great, Marietje - wel gedaan! And as for losing focus at some point - completely understandable given the amount of stitching involved... Still, it came together in a very nice and wholesome way. Veel leuk! -
Floral Belt
Riem replied to LederRudi's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Looks good to me! I'd be proud to have that hold up my trousers. -
Very nice sheath for a great looking blade! Hand stitched? The stitch line on the back looks closer to the edge than it appears to be on the front, but it might be an illusion.

pancake sheath Pancake sheath for my pocket knife
Riem replied to Riem's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
