I was flicking through Instagram and came across this picture. @bikermutt07 quote refers to practising stitching everyday and it’s true. Here is some proof of how practising stitching over a 2 year period has improved a great deal.

I know exactly where you’re coming from! when I built my house, we walked on the concrete floors for 3 years before I covered them with wood. And I’m a flooring contractor!!!

Here is a link to the a very similar splitter to mine. when you’re setting your blade... you must align the sharp tip of your blade with the very highest point of the roller exactly straight. so.. the blade must line up 2 ways. 1) Looking down - must be straight across with roller (I used the shine off the steel roller to line the blade). 2) use something to put between the roller and blade to measure the height at each side of the blade (then it can be adjusted to any height after setting). hope this helps.

Lol... Cmon @bikermutt07 you’re a carpenter and you also know how to use the French cleat system! No more excuses...

Hi @jayker2002 I have a splitter also (but not from Tandy). I polished the blade on mine too and when I returned the blade to its original position I found that I couldn’t split leather with it. The problem was the alignment of the blade to the top of the roller must be perfect. It took me a few test tries but eventually got it. Hope that helps. Ger.

Again, Thank you for all your help. I’m sure @A6C5O7will be first to try and make a pair of glove before me and rightly so as this is his thread and I seemed to barge in on it. I hope he is not offended as I’m only very interested also. I will also look forward to seen how he gets on at making his pair of gloves. They certainly don’t look too easy to make. The only leather supplier in Ireland is a small shop in Dublin and they also make gloves. I was only there once and I noticed they had clicker dies for all sizes of gloves. I will try to contact them again and see if they’re willing to help me in the process of making my pair. Then I will share the process here too. Ger.

I’d be interested in knowing the answer to this question too.

Thank you so much@motocouture, really appreciate this. I have saved the images till I have time to digest the information and get the courage to actually try to make a pair of gloves.

What's Your Handle? (Origins of your maker marks)
KingsCountyLeather replied to Mjolnir's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Thanks bikermutt07, i dont know why, but every time I try to design something I never like it. I’m actually quite good at drawing, carpentry, and making things with my hands but always someone else’s designs, always a copy. That’s why I think the people who can design new things and create art are naturally gifted and is not learned from scratch. -
Again... Beautiful work again. Do you really think the different makes of thread makes much difference except that you use the right size thread for the holes and you keep your stitches as clean and straight as you do? I have a multitude of different threads and on the odd occasion that I do keep my stitches straight it looks really good.

What's Your Handle? (Origins of your maker marks)

I’ve looked at the thread in the computer section... did you find anything interesting that you could use? I would imagine that there is a very limited amount of images without copyright? I think some people are gifted at that type of work. I remember paying an artist onetime to design a logo for a carpet store for me, I didn’t like anything she tried but paid her for her time anyway. I probably should have tried a graphic designer like Mjolnir said. -

I designed this mark myself and don’t know if I like it. I had a plastic makers mark made on Leatherworker.net and before I get another makers mark made in brass, I’d love if you’d have a go at altering it to make it better? Would you mind trying please? Ger. kings county leather.pdf -

I was born in a small town in County Offaly. After leaving my home place in 1980, I returned in 2004 to another location in Offaly and built the home where I now live with my own family. County Offaly is a county in Ireland. It is part of the Midlands Region and is also located in the province of Leinster. It is named after the ancient Kingdom of Uí Failghe and was formerly known as King's County. -
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Looks good! Your black Thread looks longer than the white...it must be the contrast of your leather and how tight you pulled the thread?
-
Is it not as simple as using white Thread on one needle and black thread on the second needle? When you cross the needles with a saddle stitch there should be one colour Thread showing on every other hole? But then woe would you do this....

I know... I’ve watched all of his videos. He is pretty rough and ready when showing his way of leather working but he’s very knowledgeable. He’s also on this forum as Gmace99. One of the best tips he gave me is using bees wax to help pull the needle through leather when it’s sticking.

You don’t hang around.... this is the video of the small clam in use. Speed up to 28:11

UKsaddlery does have it on one of his videos. Abbey England have both the wooden and metal versions for sale.

Before I started leathercraft I always loved the smell of leather and would always put my hand on it to feel the quality and then pick it up to see how well it was made. While I like your colour combinations.. This wallet looks great and and while plain to you, its something like what I would love to get for a present and cherish for ever. Great job!

Never heard of him. Looked him up on YouTube and he’s good! I will have to download some of his songs for the leatherwork now. Thanks. My wife’s brother was diagnosed with cancer 3 years ago. 5 months later he died. He was 40 and his daughter was 5 at the time. When looking at his iPad for music he liked most for the funeral... it turned out that he had been mostly listening to Michael kiwanuka song “I’m getting ready” This singer I listen to a lot also.
