  1. Your work is absolutely amazing! Anyone who’s learning carving would do well to follow you on Instagram for inspiration. How many years have you been working with leather?
  2. I’ve seen some printed leather on buyleatheronline. Maybe they ship to Australia? I’ve bought from them and the quality was good.
  3. This belt I’m making is using the technique i described above. I used 4mm irons and .8mm tiger thread.
  4. This a 5 foot belt I’m working on for a satchel. The stitch marking is 4mm and the thread is tiger .8mm. This belt has taken me about 4 hours to sew.
  5. I’ve had the same problem and I’m not entirely happy with my stitches yet. Here’s something for you to try... If you’re right handed. Looking at the front of your project where you’ve marked your holes, (but this time start with your stitching close to you and work your way back) put your first needle through from the back, then cross your needles (right hand needle on the back of the first needle) pull the thread down to the bottom of the hole and pass the other needle at the back (top) of the same hole. Do NOT cast your thread over the needle but do pull up on the thread in your left hand and down on your right hand. Don’t pull too tightly on thin leather. I know this is not the way everyone else is thought, but like You I’ve been having problems with my stitches. I watched a video of a very good leather worker do it this way. It has worked for me. But you must be consistent with your holes, and the way you produce every stitch. When you’re finished tap the stitches lightly with your hammer on a marble slab. Ger.
  6. And so, the wheel does a full circle... That picture was taken when I first set up my work shop. I thought it looked good. Here is the working version taken this morning. Doesn’t look as well, but it works for me.
  7. Not sure about the eBay metal soles... years ago all shoes soles were made from leather and I suppose the cheaper ones were nailed together instead of being stitched. at least I remember my father turning his shoe upside down and slipping it over the last and hammering small nails into the soles. He did this fairly often if I remember correctly. I still have about 2 square feet of sole leather that he used to cut New soles from. It must be about 3/8 inch thick.
  8. The Last is a three sided anvil made especially for shoe repair. It is very common in Ireland (Europe). It has two shoe shape sides and the other is a heal shape.
  9. Hi, I’m having a tough time understanding what part of the bag you’re describing (even with the pictures) did you sew the seam with a machine or hand sew? what part of Ireland are you from? Ger.
  10. Ahh well, you know what they say.... It’s not the size that matters, it’s what you do with it!
  11. The wheels are a good idea. I’d appreciate the measurements if you get a chance. Thanks. Its very interesting to hear the pros and cons of a large leather workers business, its something that I’m sure most of us on this forum don’t often get to hear about. It’s obvious that you still enjoy working with leather or you wouldn’t go to the trouble of explaining the background of your business. It’s also great to see you offer great deals to other leather workers here and by all accounts the quality of leather you sell is exceptional. I only wish I could avail of the deals myself only the cost of shipping is too prohibitive. Thank you for taking the time to chat and the very best luck to you and your business in the future. Ger.
  12. Sorry for going on... but if find your set up very impressive and interesting. On the other hand, when do you say no? You must have a small fortune tied up in stock? Does your line of goods change often or why would you be interested in deals where you pick up such a variety of leather? last question... the stands that you drape your leather hides over, are there specific dimensions for those? I would like to make one cause I have about 20 hides taking up a table I could use.
  13. Still Great! If you have it... Flaunt it! So, What is you main business? Are you a distributor of leather or a manufacturer of leather goods?
  14. Wow! That’s a great warehouse. Do you have a favorite type of leather? How many people work there?
  15. Nice work! Where do you source your bage closures and hooks?
  16. Lol. Thanks. The awl was there for size reference.
  17. Hi all, I’ve been making a bag from this leather and I don’t know what leather it is? It was one of many hides I purchased from a shoe factory and I know it is chrome tanned. It has a beautiful soft velvet feel to it with a Matt finish, when folded it has a pull up look to it (only a little though) It has a white layer between the top grain and the flesh back. (I skived a little piece in the picture) It is definitely real leather as I have the full side of leather. Has anyone come across this type of leather before? Ger.
  18. I know... I’d love to buy loads of it and sell it on at a good price to others but I don’t have the storage (or cash). The other thing is, it’s all chrome tanned, it’s beautiful leather but I have to paint all the exposed edges.
  19. The town I came from has more than 1000 years of history. @nstarleather I would love to have a wander around your warehouse... Do you charge for guided tours? There’s a closed shoe factory near me that’s bigger than your warehouse with approx 50 to 100 pallets of shoe leather just sitting there going mouldy. I bought about 30 hides but I only do leather as a hobby at the moment and cant store anymore.
  20. https://youtu.be/uMg55cWIneo https://youtu.be/q5NJGez7Dcw My YouTube channel has only 2 videos and they’re not for educational purpose but only for anyone’s enjoyment at watching a beginner at work...
  21. I know.. I only meant to buy the half moon knife but when I takes 3 weeks for delivery I thought I might a well buy this as well and then maybe this too... before I knew it I was re-financing the mortgage.
  22. I only had Tandy awls before buying his and even when I sharpened the Tandy awls they weren’t a patch on how sharp his awls were. I was (and still am) very happy when I used the new awls. His delivery charges stays the same even if you buy a bunch of tools. On the shop site they charge delivery on each item.
  23. Yeah, He goes by Kevin901120 in DHgate.com Looks like an Etsy shop in China? His prices are a little cheaper if you contact him privately.
  24. If you dampen the leather and double up on the credit cards in the slots it will stretch out faster for you. Use old cards as you may break them pushing them in... Nice job on the stitching.
