I am unsure if this is the forum to use, but all of the shows posted in the calender show a start and finish time of 5.00 AM. I am in the UK and work with a lot of folk across the USA, so my calender shaws a few time zones, but can they finish at 5.00 too? I am presuming they start at 9.00 AM locally or 10.00 AM maybe. Am interested in the European show so times may differ from US. Thanks Harry

Can anyone identify this vintage tool “big awl w/ brass sleeve”
bermudahwin replied to Heespharm's topic in Leather Tools
Just 'cos it's old, don't mean it's nice. My first thought was one of the really heavy awls for saddles, but the sleeve was wrong; now I know it was so, so wrong. Harry -
Hand Clicker Press now available at Diamond Awl Workshop

Maybe exclusive as a non-ebay / Amazon retailer in UK. I haven't seen one for sale in UK until this one, but haven't checked ebay / Amazon for UK sourced. Apparently exclusivity is all relative.... H -
@Bikermutt "Nigel at armitage leather has done an entire series on stitching chisels and pricking irons on YouTube" I think he has done a comprehensive pdf summarising the videos. H
-
I gave up trying to tell them apart until I saw the marks. I only use pricking irons, and two of the patterns match mine. Two don't. I never saw the term stitching chisel til I looked outside of the U.K. Mine are all from Abbey. But I had been wondering about others. Most comparisons are verbal as opposed to pictoral. So I can't tell from websites what the stitch is likely to be like. Best H

At last, a stitchmarked on leather comparison thank you. Harry .

Cool, that will look excellent, have you a design for Jörmungandr in mind? H

Duh! Didn't even realise it was in show off! I would have commented more on the rest! Sorry, sir! Now I'm awake, I can see. Harry

58 and amazed at the age range here... 16 thru 85 and prepared to own up to it. Good on you guys. Harry

I've been using small rawhide and larger lignum vitae for ever, keep looking at Veritas brass mails.

Should be, the braids at really neat, but must admit the runes caught my eye.

Did you see my edit? Sad to admit 'accentuated' has me baffled

Interesting runes. Elder Futhark? I never considered it, and always marked tools at college 'HmW', damn but yours looks better.

What head material are you looking for? I've seen some excellent ones on woodcarving and stone carving sites over the years H

? what's wrong with me using a dremel on my lawnmowers ? Harry

It's faint, next to the top right of the big picture. If you tap it you can deselect one signature or all signatures, H

I've been using my deemed a lot recently, having not used it for an age. Each time I want to change tool its been a hassle, but using a proper spanner, and gently persisting has worked. Its much better again, also olfart's comment on pushing the tool in to get the collet loose is exactly right. H

If its worked for 40 years, stick with it. It's similar time for me; every finds the way that works for them. I know that friends skive differently to me, and having worked with British Library bookbinders, they do things differently too. Brian's comments make a lot of sense. One thought may be a build up of dust tightening the roller. Best Harry

How do I find out suppliers that support the forum?
bermudahwin replied to bermudahwin's topic in Suppliers
Being paranoid about security, it has just taken me an hour to see the banner ads, and get the exclusions right. Now I know what folk are talking about! Browser, Firewall / antivrus, add ons etc all were having their input, but now I can see, thank you for the heads up. Harry -
How do I find out suppliers that support the forum?
bermudahwin replied to bermudahwin's topic in Suppliers
Aaah ad-blockers, that would be it! that's why I've never seen any. I'll turn it off. Thanks Harry -
is there a list of suppliers that are active on or support the forum, please? I would like to at least compare costs with other suppliers, so that I can direct my purchasing to those that actively share knowledge or otherwise support the Forum.# I cannot find a list. As an example, I was looking for JLS Leathers, as they/he had been suggested in a reply, but the google search took me to an unobtainable site error message. It would be great if such a list could be compiled and maintained, for those of us new to the forum. Thanks guys Harry

Oddly the word thimble was originlly a thumb cover. From Merriam Webster - Old English thȳmel covering for the thumb 15th Century We always used to stitch a piece of leather into a tube, for the thumb and for each little finger (in the joint) so that when you pulled the thread through in double hand stitching it did not cut you, I still have one somewhere for the left pinkie, as it sometimes cuts open. I know you can get large open ended metal thimbles from haberdashers. called quilters thimbles (I think) Hope you find one Harry

Just downloaded it from archive.org along with a couple of others, great call, thanks Harry

That looks to capture the idea well. Internally without a cover may look a bit rough for some jobs but as drawn here it would be easy to work out the collar length needed etc. I am totally self taught and I should get around to getting some books like that as the terminology at least could be of help at times. Thanks for the compliment. Brian Brian You can incorporate linings , eithey by turning over the edges of the body and gusset onto a fabric before assembly, or by fitting a loose lining after body assembly. Personally I would line each piece prior to assembly, as it would not compromise the size of the gusset, and would make for neater interior. Harry
