Lederkraft Studios - Free Leather Working Guide
AndyL1 replied to Caldorn's topic in Patterns and Templates
So cool! They have some amazing patterns. I just paid for the book on pre-order. -
Just finished up this little guy for a repeat customer tonight. Made out of 2-3 oz veg tan inside and out. Lined with 1 oz black pigskin. Cash pocket and two credit card pockets. It came out so nice I think I need to make one for myself (yes, I still use checks to pay bills too! Lol!) Cheers, Andy

It's made from 4/5 oz, not wet formed it just has a stack of cards in it giving it some shape.

I dye my stuff the base color, in this case a nice brown, then use a sponge loaded with a bit of black. Pat the black on, let it set a little bit, then wipe lightly here and there. Now I gave away my secret! Lol! Cheers, Andy

1St Attempt At A Briefcase.
AndyL1 replied to Spindrift57's topic in Satchels, Luggage and Briefcases
This is very nice! I love the use of the fly rod handles as the handle for the bag. Very cool! Not sure why they are rotated in the post... I opened them in Photoshop and they are correct there. Anyway, I took the liberty of uploading them again if you don't mind. Cheers, Andy -
My Newest Wallet !
AndyL1 replied to Leprechaunleather's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Looks good! I like the rivets in the corners... nice touch. -
They have their own factory that just happens to be in China. Don't be too quick to judge things made overseas... some is junk and some is top-notch. It all depends on the manufacturer really. I trust buckleguy.com to have some good stuff. Of course it would be great to source everything made in the US... it's very hard these days as it just costs too much. That's not to say that the quality goes down though. My $.02.

I have one chucked up in my drill press. You will be more than pleased! I LOVE mine. I just use some saddle soap on my edges and get a perfect edge all the time.

Celtic Horse Shoulder Bag
AndyL1 replied to AndyL1's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks all! This one is getting some nice attention it seems. Glad I could pass along some inspiration. @ScotsPagan this leather was some chrome tanned cow hide I picked up. It's really nice stuff and I seem to have bought the last side of it when I went to get more the other day. I think it's in the 4-5 oz range. Fairly soft and flexible but seemed to stiffen a little due to the way I constructed the bag (with the seams being sewn and three layers for the back side). Can't wait to see your bag with the tooling. I'll keep an eye out for your post. Cheers, Andy- 23 replies

Perhaps a spray on polyurethane? I was thinking of using this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Minwax-11-5-oz-Satin-Fast-Drying-Polyurethane-Aerosol-Spray-33060/100376200 on a sign project where it would be hanging outdoors.

Brilliant! (and fancy. Haha!) I love seeing items being re-purposed out of necessity. Good job. Andy

Celtic Horse Shoulder Bag
AndyL1 replied to AndyL1's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks Eccho! I wish I had more of this leather too. I have enough right now to make a couple more bags, then I'll need to see if I can get some. This all started based on a (very) crude sketch I drew up. See attached. Also, the inside is fairly simple with just a pocket sewn to the inside back panel. I normally put little darts in the bottom corners of the pocket as it helps to keep it somewhat open. This leather was thin and supple enough that they weren't required.- 23 replies

Where To Get A Clicker Machine And Dies From?
AndyL1 replied to DianeWood's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Here you go... as you can see I cut the legs down so it fits on my workbench. I left enough on the bottom so I can adjust the table up or down a notch for cutting or stamping. Works great! And of course I had to paint it black! ;-) Andy -
Where To Get A Clicker Machine And Dies From?
AndyL1 replied to DianeWood's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I cut off the ram rod (the steel cylinder hanging directly below the jack). Then welded two 1/2" thick steel plates, one to the bottom cross brace and the other to the top. Works great! I've since cut about two feet off the legs and have the press mounted to a workbench. I'll take some pictures and post them up tonight if I get a chance. -
Celtic Horse Shoulder Bag
AndyL1 replied to AndyL1's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks! Machine sewn on my old Juki LS321. I used to hand stitch before I got my machine... can't compete with the time saving and I haven't had one fail yet!- 23 replies

Celtic Horse Shoulder Bag
AndyL1 replied to AndyL1's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thank you both! I really like this one too. I have enough of this leather to make 2 more and I can't wait to get started. Here is a photo of the back. I tried editing the original post to include this photo but I guess you can only edit a post once?- 23 replies

I've had pretty good luck with them. I apply it with a damp sponge and get good coverage. Honestly though if my dye jobs come out a little blotchy, I don't really mind as that suits my style of leatherwork. I antique all my items to give them a very rustic look. Fiebing's Pro Oil Dye for my black though all the way. Tandy can't touch that stuff.

Hey all, Just finished this little purse up last night. I'm not sure what type of leather the body is made from but it's very nice stuff... great grain and color to it. Celtic horses tooled into some 5/6oz veg tan. This measures roughly 8x10 inches. Adjustable buckled strap. More pics to come! Cheers, Andy

They are Line 24 snaps in an antiqued pewter and match the finish of the buckle. I put snaps on there because this is one of two belts (the 2nd is black) and I wanted him to be able to swap the buckle out. I think on the ones I actually sell (this was a gift) I may just rivet the buckle in.

I do have a profile on Pinterest, but I haven't really set it up fully as I've been too busy. I'm not even really sure how it works, that's how infrequently I go on there. Now that you've told me this I think I'll look into it more. Thanks for the heads up! Oh and TomT, glad you like my work! I won't say where I get my clips (a little professional secret if you don't mind)... But I will say Google is your friend! Lol!

Where To Get A Clicker Machine And Dies From?
AndyL1 replied to DianeWood's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I had my dies made by Texas Custom Dies (see a banner above). They are awesome to work with and the dies are very good quality. I expect them to last a long time. For the clicker, I modified a shop press from Harbor Freight. Not sure if you'd like to go that route or an actual clicker. I couldn't point you in the right direction for a clicker. Cheers, Andy -
Thanks! Yes, I think priced just right I'll have no worries. It's all about finding that "sweet spot" in the price range. Thanks! I think I'll just say "buy this or that P.O.S. vinyl one from China." Haha! Now I have 50 buckles that just came in... gotta take some good photos and get these sold!

So I finally got around to start making belts. I did this one for a friend and now I've ordered a bunch of buckles up to make them for sale. Still getting the hang of sizing them correctly but I think these will be good sellers! Cheers, Andy
