Uneven Dye
stelmackr replied to nervjiggy's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
I don't believe that "daubers" were ever designed to apply dye to leather, other than to the edges of leather. Large areas of leather act like a big sponge and that first touch of the dauber sucks way too much dye and makes a spot or line that is too hard to blend out. You wind up soaking the leather with dye to try to match the coverage. Either dip the whole project in the dye or airbrush the dye for an even coat. Even a very large paint brush (4-6") could be used to flood the dye on, if too large to dip. I've never gotten good results with a dauber on large areas of leather. They are great for belt edges and even then if you set fire to them (the wool ones) and put then out quickly, they form a better dauber that has better control for edge dying. I used Rice (defunct company), Tippmann and American Efird thread. All were nylon and in sizes 207 and 277. Bob Stelmack www.pslac.org

Aaron, I really don't want to go to the trouble and cost to do it. I kind of figure the person that wants it can go to Kinkos (or similar) to scan and print it. Just my thoughts. Bob Stelmack www.pslac.org

Thanks for the kind words. The bag holds the ball in the bottom, the shoes lay on top of the ball. That is why the top of the bag is so wide. So I guess you are interested in the pattern. Where do I send it? Bob Stelmack www.pslac.org

I have the Tandy Bowling Bag Kit (Stock No. 4429) that has the instructions, pattern and photocarve pattern. It is way too big to copy, since it is full sized. I could lend it to you. On a side note, this was my very first leather project I ever made (circa 1988). I made two other bags, but did not have the plastic ball holder or brass feet from the kit, so I just cut some lumber and made a box frame and used some bolts with fancy brass nuts that were domed to hold the wood and when through the leather to be the feet. I could draw a picture, if you would like. These pictures are using the Tandy ball holder and the Tandy feet. Bob Stelmack www.pslac.org

Here is a sample of using letterpress moveable lead type to impress text into leather. Great for long small text: Bob Stelmack www.pslac.org

I don't know, I've cut leather before and as my Dad said: "I've cut it twice and it's still too short". A new piece sounds like the right idea.

I use Tandy's Eco-Flo Hi-Lite Stain Chestnut Tan http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/home/department/leather-dye/2608-04.aspx Here is an example: I don't use it like the directions say. I flood the carving with the dye. Move it around for a good coverage. Wipe it off with circular motions with a folded paper towel (so it does not removed the black from the lettering). If there are any streaks, I just leave them. Let it dry. Put on a heavy coat of Aussie Conditioner and let that dry. Wipe off the excess. Use a damp paper towel to remove any streaks and the seal with Fiebing's Leather Sheen Acrylic Spray. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/home/department/leather-dye/leather-finish/2205-00.aspx Hope that helps. Darn, I put this in the wrong forum: On offer is a Tippmann Boss Manual Sewing Machine with accessories. I have three other sewing machines and don't use this one much any more. Works fine and always kept greased and oiled. Has all the accessories: extra needles bobbins, manual, alternate feet, belt guide, etc. My wife says: "Four sewing machines is an obsession!" Asking $600 plus postage. Bob Stelmack www.pslac.org

You know, I forgot about the machine I saw in England. The man who was the owner of the UK Tandy Store has a machine that looked like a Xerox machine that printed directly on leather. I have a piece of that leather and even made a book cover from it. I can't locate the picture. But, if anyone is really interested in obtaining the multi-thousand dollar leather printing machine--I can put you in touch with the man who owns it. Bob Stelmack www.pslac.org -
I've been experimenting with some acrylic mediums and have a little PDF file on what I have found: edge_finishes_for_chrome_tanned_leather.pdf There is a particular acrylic medium (Clear Tar Gel) that does have a rubber like feel to it. All the acrylic mediums can be simply colored with acrylic paints (ie. black, brown) or left clear. Bob Stelmack www.pslac.org

Norm Lynds makes some very similar to the Peter's (IMHO) and Norm's contact information can be found in the RawHide Gazette at http://www.pslac.org Bob Stelmack
