Thread problem, any thoughts helpful
chuck123wapati replied to srtolly's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
the thread could have been either worn off or my guess is some type of chemical they used on the outside of the holster ate it up. I know from working the oil field that some lubricants will eat up the stitching in leather boots rather quickly too, guys used to try and waterproof their boots with the crap and in a few months were buying a new pair of redwings lol. -
that should work perfectly. good luck!

1940's style Ranger buckle set.....where to find.
chuck123wapati replied to MikeRock's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
found this site never ordered from them. https://alltribes.com/southwest-jewelry/belt-buckles/texas-ranger-buckle-sets/ i found aa bunch of custom makers but man are they expensive. -
first off a punch doesn't have to be razor sharp or soon after you hit it with a maul a few times the edge will roll and be useless. if you can see any amount of flat on the edge then it needs that taken down to non existent but not thinned or sharpened as you know sharp to be on a knife. I use a very fine sanding belt 400/600 grit on my belt sander so not much metal comes off and slowly turn the punch until i take down that flat edge keeping the wide bevel intact. what ever method slow is the key and paying attention to removing only enough metal to eliminate that flat area. I'm sure you can do it many other ways but thats the tool i have that works best. the idea is to end up with a good stout edge that tapers to zero and is still even all the way around and is strong enough to smack with a hammer. good luck!!

Strap end cutting with a pneumatic rivet press
chuck123wapati replied to RockyAussie's topic in How Do I Do That?
man that is cool but it looks like a finger could be lost pretty quickly too if not careful. -
1. you can fill it with epoxy. 2. you can cut off the tapered part drill it out a bit, be very careful of splitting the handle, and glue in a new piece of hardwood dowel then re-drill and taper it to fit the ferule and awl blade.

Just a quick Sheath
chuck123wapati replied to ChipperBags's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
great job, yes cut the edges, bevel and /or sand then burnish them. Follow your stitches to make it look nice and even. pull only the stitches out that run off the leather under the other set of stitches, not many will notice the extra holes. -
i wish it were, not many roos in Wyoming lol. Elk and deer here.

A little personal defense
chuck123wapati replied to Gezzer's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
your right on with this sentiment the utmost first line of defense is being aware, most criminals are very cowardly, meaning if your looking at them or notice them they probably wont make you a target. 30 years working a prison i have seen very well trained officers get taken, why because they weren't aware of who was around them. Watch everyone around you all the time, see what they are doing and why they are there before they get close enough to do you harm. i still do it out of habit having carried a toolbox into cell blocks alone for many years, no one gets behind me without me turning and looking right at them. If someone seems suspicious look directly at them so they know you see them and above all believe the hairs on your neck. As for the door situation open it but dont go out until you look around and get your eyes focused and be prepared to shut it fast, criminals depend on those doors locking behind an unaware person after they shut then that person has lost thier escape if it feels weird don't go out, shut it. I'm done now lol. except for this if your standing in a line of ten people anywhere in this country two at least will have felony records some places many more. -
i like all three, the bear track is my favorite though those blemishes in the leather add to the look.

A little personal defense
chuck123wapati replied to Gezzer's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
both quite simple the solar plexus is that really soft spot right under your rib cage in the middle of your chest its easy to find just take your thumb and push in there you'll know instantly how it would feel. The brachial stun is on the side at the base of your neck its a group of nerves right at the base of the neck and what all the movie karate chops used to simulate. -
i have to agree with that ole geezer lol. It isn't bad at all. I like it! I have the one you sent me right above my workbench on the wall and enjoy it every day.

chuck123wapati replied to Gezzer's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
awesome is all i can say! also teach her the solar plexus strike with the blunt end of that and a brachial stun. We were taught many self defense moves at the prison i worked in, a desk top staple gun opened up makes one dandy sap too. -
heck yea!!!
