Tallow and oil did not mix; beeswax helped.
Wepster replied to SUP's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Not really on topic, but related is a very distant way..... Watching a "Have Gun Will Travel" rerun.. one of the characters in the episode stated his occupation as a "tallow and leather buyer" (his family owned a tannery in New York). -
Looks nice. Will follow to see what hardware and attachments you chose to compliment the design of the bag and pattern of the lambskin.

Don't know if this will help, seems it comes up with some frequency in woodworking.....https://www.finewoodworking.com/2002/09/01/making-three-phase-machines-work-in-a-one-phase-shop

Prompted me to dig a bit, saw this info from a supplier of lotion "stuff". Not dead on topic, but informative, https://lotioncrafter.com/products/beeswax-white-nf -
There are probably a hundred cobblers in New York State alone (one source states 7000 in the US). There is one in Amsterdam and a few in the capital area. Shoe Repair. Makers of shoes are shoemakers or cordwainers.

Well, I bought the set direct from WUTA, have not used them, BECAUSE WUTA failed to send the plastic templates. Have been trying to get them since Jan 11. I threated to dispute payment, they then got serious. First they said here, and sent pdf. Not acceptable. Then they said the 8mm is out of stock, yet they still offer the set of four with template on their website. Waiting to hurt another unsuspecting customer. They offered the 7,9,10 and a note pad. Said have no need for note pad. So, send the 3, they offered refund for the missing 8mm, but please assist them in removing the refuse payment. I told them its on hold. They said, they still see it, remove it and they will send. I just emailed them back, saying they are lying because I have not yet disputed the payment, but I am going to now, since I know they can not be believed. I have seen good reviews on many of the WUTA products, but I do not think buying direct from them is a good idea.

Those look wonderful. She is lucky, but I imagine she knows that. I would be interested in hearing about the insole and outsole also, if you would please.

little less $ https://www.alibris.com/booksearch?keyword=LEATHER+CRAFTING+STARTER+BOOK&mtype=B&qsort=p sometimes these books can be found online as pdfs, legal? probably not. Here is a source for free ebooks, legal (lots of fiction, non fiction books also, Tom Swift, Sherlock Holmes etc etc )( an aside, for those who like audio books, https://librivox.org/ older books in the public domain, like Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe etc) https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/search/?query=leather&submit_search=Go! in a similar vein, from Colorado 4H, links to their course (best word I have for this) https://www.google.com/search?q=Leathercraft+–+Unit+1+-+Colorado+4-H+Colorado+State+University+https%3A%2F%2Fco4h.colostate.edu+›+projects+›+manuals&oq=Leathercraft+–+Unit+1+-+Colorado+4-H+Colorado+State+University+https%3A%2F%2Fco4h.colostate.edu+›+projects+›+manuals&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOdIBCDI2ODNqMGo3qAIAsAIA&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

Transferring tooling patterns onto the leather
Wepster replied to TailGunner's topic in How Do I Do That?
an idea i saw on you tube -
There was one on ebay, gone Monday morning, then I found one on Alibris, there and Second Sale are good used book sites. Sorry, sorta, that I scarfed one. There was a leather vendor at the Ithaca NY farmers market last fall that had shoes. Basic stitch down chukka style. Similar to the Aurora shoes. That got me thinking, then your post..... I do really like shoes......
-
@Mablungyour work has motivated me to try them myself. Not that I think it looks easy, but it is doable. Just got a copy of shoes for free people used, (cheap! $7.80!). What have I got to lose? some time, some leather (if I really goof up, use the leather for key rings, bracelets!). Thank you.

Nice, the colors and the hardware make a very classy bag. The work is beautiful. I am planning a draw type bag for SWMBO, I was thinking at least one loop for one of these key ring clips https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TC6KC5V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and some sort of hanging pouch for cell phone. OR, cell phone pouch, with ring for one of those key ring hooks! so a loop in the bag on each side.

I am guessing here, perhaps it breaks down the ingredients just a bit (assuming you use just a bit, in the wood finish its said to be a small amount) to aid in the blending of the wax and oil. Perhaps less stirring is needed?

I believe with stitch down, the upper is stitched to a midsole, an outsole is then glued to the midsole. Look at the link I did above to Aurora shoe, they have decent photos of their shoes. You can see the sole has no stitches. Or with thick enough soles, you cut a grove in the outsole for the stitches.

in the wood finish its wax, raw linseed oil and a bit of the orange oil solvent, the oil part is the linseed oil. Don't know about linseed oil and leather, but perhaps sub NFO or jojoba or what you like and the orange oil... (for a VOC free solvent). WARNING some oils mentioned may cause fires as they produce heat while drying. Linseed oil will, rags used to apply or wipe off should be laid flat to dry, bunched up rags could catch fire. Do not know about some other oils that are drying oils (Stand oil is very refined linseed oil, it gives off heat also). Just something to be aware of. This stuff is to be used on bare wood or something like milk paint. It is ment to be absorbed into the wood. Interesting how there are some overlaps in treating/careing/finishing leather and wood. Some info on the milk paint co citrus oil,,,,https://www.casketbuildersupply.com/pages/about-orange-oil-solvent#:~:text=A Natural%2C Non-Toxic%2C,a concentrated cleaner and degreaser. I am done.

Upstate NY has a small shoe manufacturer, whose Chukka looks a lot like yours! Though you might like to see their site https://www.aurorashoeco.com/collections/all-products

to make the wax a bit softer, see my mention of the wood finish, a citrus solvent - basically citrus oil. Allergy alert... cod liver oil -- fish allergy Cod liver oil not considered vegan, if that matters to them.

I see there are a few references here to jojoba oil. I just saw a wood finish made with beeswax and jojoba oil. And Christopher Schwarz, and reasonable well know woodworker sells a finish he calls soft wax, beeswax, raw linseed oil (not "boiled" that has metal driers in it) and a bit of citrus based solvent. Ment for wood of course, but does not sound like there is anything that would be bad for leather. Just that there is probably more wax than would be desired.

This may have been mentioned earlier, this thread has a lot of words, BUT, using nut oils maybe problematic for any one who has a nut allergy. Perhaps the soles of feet are callused enough that the allergens won't be an issue. I do not know, I am not a physician, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night. I, personally, since my nut allergy has landed me in the emergency room on multiple occasions, would not touch any thing treated with even a small amount of a tree nut oil (my particular allergy, some are affected by peanuts).
